In The Projectionist, Kendall Messick has preserved Brinckle’s important body of work in a way that is equal to the artistry of the author himself. His photographs are both tender and authentic in the greatest sense, and I found myself as close to his subject as I ever could have hoped to be."

Kendall Messick is a photographer and filmmaker. His documentary films have been featured in numerous film festivals. His photographs reside in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the High Museum of Art. HEMPHILL exhibited photographs and objects from The Projectionist series to great acclaim in 2008. In June 2011, The Projectionist will be exhibited at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Young builders are invited to visit the exhibition Designing Tomorrow: America’s World’s Fairs of the 1930s and then design their own buildings from recycled craft materials to create a City of the Future on the floor of the Museum’s Great Hall.
Budding artists and designers can help create a mural or design a mobile to take home as part of Art for Public Spaces, inspired by items on display in Designing Tomorrow.FREE. $5 donation suggested. Most appropriate for ages 5–13. Drop-In. Individual registration is not required. Scout groups, please register.

Hillyer Art Space proudly presents Claremix, a performance in memoriam to the artist Jeanne-Claude involving clarinets, bass clarinets and multi-media acts. Full of audacity and bass clarinet contempt, the concert features Bryan Jacob's recent award winning piece Ways for 2 bass clarinets and electronics as well as an interactive video. To ensure an evening to remember, the program includes composers such as John Zorn, as well as a lovely melody by Beat Furrer.
Krista Martynes is a Montreal-based artist taking Claremix on an East Coast Tour including Massachusetts, New York, Washington, DC, and Virginia and will be featured in the Spark Festival in Minnesota. This tour has been funded by the Encore Grant from the American Composers Forum as well as by the Quebec Council for the Arts.

Dr. Itzhak Brook specializes in pediatrics and infectious diseases and is also a Professor at Georgetown University. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2006. In his book My Voice, he tells his story from diagnosis through surgeries and treatment. Pulling no punches, he compliments those who deserve it and
candidly relates the many disappointments and trials with doctors, nurses, hospitals and his efforts to learn a new way to speak. He tells of his experiences as a patient, like most of us, not as a physician.

Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival producer, author and artist, Tom Block is directing The Iraq History Project Art Festival which will run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 3 at DePaul University.

New Artist in Residency Program in Silver Spring, MD
Announcing New Artist-In-Residency Program
The Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus of Montgomery College announces a new Artist in Residency Program. The Department of Visual Arts and Design is seeking proposals for residencies beginning in spring 2011. Artists will be provided studio space in the Morris and Gwendolyn Foundation Arts Center. Proposals are sought that will benefit, involve, or impact art students and members of the college community. Residency proposals lasting from one month up to two academic semesters will be considered.
Resident Artists may be granted access to facilities such as; fully equipped printmaking studio, ceramics studio, sculpture studio, B/W darkroom, MAC Lab, weaving looms, in accord with their residency proposal. Exhibitions in conjunction with residencies may also be considered.

Hillyer Art Space and Project Andini announce Puzzling (a) Space, a site-specific exhibition of painting, installation, video and performance by four contemporary Asian artists: Soun Hong (Korean), Chakraphan Rangaratna (Thai), Ding Ren (Chinese American), and Eric De Leon Zamuco (Filipino). This exhibition is co-curated by Jeong-ok Jeon (Korean) and Jammie Chang (Taiwan), and as a collaborative project it will bring dynamic cultural perspectives to the District arts community and increase cultural exchange between Asia and the U.S.
Puzzling (a) Space begins with the concept of site-specific art, the notion that an artwork comes to life within the exhibition space and an audience's participation is similarly an essential component to the artworks' realization. The place is not just a backdrop or a simple space to contain the artwork. Rather, the place conveys the purpose and acts as a vehicle for the art, just as the audience's interaction acts as a catalyst. Thus the artwork will only be complete in the context of three contributing elements: the artist, the place, and the audience.
