ArtFest 2010, a lively Open House and Holiday Party will take place Friday, December 3, 6:00-9:00pm at 305 Madison Street. This fun FREE event takes place at The Art League's Madison Annex, which is where all of The Art League's 3D classes are taught. Tour the facility while viewing works by Art League instructors, enjoying artist demonstrations, listening to great live music by Rew Smith band, shopping at a popular holiday Ceramic and Jewelry Sale (which will be held throughout the weekend), enjoying food and drinks, and more. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Washington Project for the Arts announce the openings the second annual holiday gift shop, IceBox.  The shop will feature a wide variety of artworks and other handmade goods by WPA member artists. Participating artists include Double A Projects (Athena Robles and Anna Stein), Denee Barr, Sandy Gold, James Halloran, Linda Hesh, Ellen Hill, Rebecca Kallem, Alice Kress, Laurel Lukaszewski, Susana Raab, Amy Carmichael Smith, John Totaro, Katharine Watson, Robert Weiner and Claudia Vess. Featuring jewelry, small works of art, household goods, totebags and greeting cards, IceBox offers a great selection of creative, unique holiday gifts!

IceBox, which will take over the WPA office at 2023 Massachusetts Avenue NW, runs from December 3 through December 23. There will be an opening reception on Friday, December 3 from 6-8pm, in conjunction with Dupont Circle First Fridays, and a special shopping event on Monday, December 20 from 6:30-8:30pm. The shop will also be open Monday-Friday, from 12pm-5pm and by appointment.

Transformer Provides Immediate Response to Recent Censorship

In early response to the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian Institution's censoring of David Wojnarowicz's 1987 video work A Fire in My Belly, from the current Hide/Seek exhibition, Transformer initiated a screening of the work in our storefront project space at 1404 P Street, NW, Washington, DC.  The work currently on view is an approximately four minute excerpt of the original thirty-minute work in progress by the artist.

Transformer will soon be showing the entire thirty-minute Wojnarowicz work in progress, with unique permission of his Estate: "I give Transformer permission to show this clearly censored work, I only wish David were alive, he would tear these censors apart."  -Tom Rauffenbart, Executor of the Estate of David Wojnarowicz.

"As a response to the censorship by the Smithsonian of Wojnarowicz's work, and in honor of World AIDS Day & Day With(out) Art, the many alternative art spaces, visual arts organizations, artists, and activists around the world that have paved the path for freedom of expression & the existence of experimental arts venues like Transformer, we feel it is our job to champion all artists' creative expression without constraints, and to continue the important dialogue Wojnarowicz's work generates about aggression, hunger, community, love, loss, as well as religion" states Victoria Reis, co-Founder, Executive & Artistic Director of Transformer.

Artistic Action Planned for Thursday, December 2:
A silent protest march from Transformer to the
National Portrait Gallery and then on to Congress.
Meet at Transformer at 5:30pm. 
The artistic action will begin at 6pm with mouths tied.

Transforming traditional notions of functional objects into elegant, concise ideas, Takagi has been awarded the 2010 Bernhardt American Design Honor as the Emerging Designer of the Year.

The Jerusalem Fund Gallery features 25 rare silver prints, taken in the 1920’s and 30’s, of historically 

significant images of Palestine, such as that of uniformed Palestine Police mounted on camels, and the above 

image of the Graf Zeppelin dirigible over Jerusalem.

Elia Kahvedjian was born in 1910 in Ourfa, Turkey and passed away April 1999. 

On December 11, the annual Jerusalem Fund Souk will feature many Palestinian artists and craftspeople.

Now in its sixth year, the Food Glorious Food art show and associated 2011 Calendar will be unveiled by the Zenith Community Arts Foundation (ZCAF) at Chevy Chase Pavilion on Wednesday, December 1 at a Calendar Launch Celebration & Silent Auction on the Terrace Level at Embassy Suites Hotel, from 6:30-9:30pm. This year’s theme, Sustainable & Scrumptious, was selected to create greater awareness of the environment and promote healthy, sustainable dining.  Proceeds will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank, and WUSA 9 News Anchor Andrea Roane will serve as the evening’s emcee.    

Cooked up by ZCAF Founder and Executive Director, Margery E. Goldberg in 2005, Food Glorious Food’s menu of food, art and charity is a recipe for success that has raised more than $115,000 for the food bank in five years, while pleasing the palates of art patrons and foodies through a unique collaboration between artists and restaurants. Area businesses add spice to the mix by sponsoring the calendar and donating items for the auction.  The overall project raises money through calendar sales, a percentage of proceeds from a related month-long food art exhibition and the Calendar Launch & Silent Auction.

Duke Ellington School of the Arts Presents: Dreamgirls

 The Duke Ellington School of the Arts (3500 R Street, NW) is putting on a production of Dreamgirls from Thursday, December 2 through Saturday, December 18 in the Duke Ellington Theater. The original Dreamgirl, Jennifer Holliday, will perform on Thursday, December 9 at 7 p.m. and will host a "One Night Only" VIP reception following the show. The Dreamgirls performances are directed by New York-based Broadway actress Lynda Gravatt, and other Broadway and Hollywood professionals are working with the production as master artists. The show will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly, and 2 p.m. shows will be held on December 4, 11 and 18. Tickets are $25, $30 and $35.

Local Young “Old Master” Paintings to be Displayed at the Carnegie Institution for Charity

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Teresa Oaxaca, 22, of Arlington, Virginia will show new paintings in the Rotunda of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C. in connection with the Esperanza Education Fund’s Benefit Concert on December 6, 2010, 7:30-9:00 PM.

The evening will begin with a performance in the Ballroom by the internationally renowned Classical/Flamenco Guitarist Grigory Goryachev. After the concert there will be a champagne reception in the Rotunda where Oaxaca’s new 6-foot high paintings will be featured. This is Esperanza's second Winter Benefit.

Teresa Oaxaca is a classically trained painter who grew up in Arlington.  She studied for five years in Florence, Italy, and currently works in the Washington D.C. area as a full-time artist.  Her portfolio largely consists of figural painting and still life although she is also known as a portrait artist and has been taking on numerous commissions from clients in the Washington D.C. area since 2006.  This young art prodigy has already received high recognition, including winning international awards such as the Canadian-based Elizabeth Greenshields grant twice, apprenticing with the Norwegian painter Odd Nerdrum, and exhibiting internationally.  For more information on Ms. Oaxaca’s paintings, visit her website at www.teresaoaxaca.com.
 
The Esperanza Education Fund, Inc. is a community-financed college scholarship program founded and operated by a diverse, all-volunteer group of young professionals in the Capital region. He has maintained a diversified practice in architecture and urban design since 1981, and worked in North and Central America, Europe and Asia. His experience includes urban design, town planning, architectural design, interior design, landscape design, construction management, graphic design, and rendering. In addition, Mr. Thadani has taught at various institutions in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Since its formation in 1993, he has been a charter member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and was appointed to the Board in 2005.

Bethesda Painting Awards

The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is currently accepting applications for the seventh annual Bethesda Painting Awards, a juried competition honoring selected painters from D.C., MD and VA with $14,000 in prize monies. 

Deadline for slide submission is Friday, February 25, 2011.  Up to nine finalists will be invited to display their work in a group exhibition held in June 2011 in downtown Bethesda.

The competition will be juried by Evelyn Hankins, Associate Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C; Phillip Geiger, Professor of Drawing and Painting, University of Virgina; and Jinchul Kim, Art Professor, Salisbury University.
