"Swaying Goddess of the Fourfold"
Patricia Smith
Reverberations
June 9-July 4
Opening June 12, 6:30-9:00 PM
This exhibit is part of the Second Saturday Art Walks at the Workhouse Arts Center.
The exhibition “Reverberations” reflect the artist‟s explorations of the terms goddess, women and feminine. She seeks to arrive at views of women other than stereotypes. Her explorations are open-ended, not literal, making possible a proliferation of meanings that may be lived out by each viewer. The paintings are mixed media, water dispersable acrylics on kozo paper mounted on boards, with additions of collaged papers and printmaking techniques.
The artist believes that we must recognize our continuance with the past in order to transform the present and create new visions for the future. The metaphor is the central creative process which leads to an open-ended understanding of women. The ‟goddess‟ is not taken to be a super-being but a metaphor that animates possibilities for women. Spiraling webs of meaning emerge in the creative process, which can become a vehicle for creating our potentialities, of what we may become.
