The Art of Change

An Inaugural Celebration of DC's Creative Communities

Artomatic and Playa del Fuego have joined together to create this year's most distinctive inaugural celebration, the Art of Change, on Jan. 20 at 8 p.m.


The Art of Change will encompass three separate venues: the Warehouse Theatre at 1021 7th St. NW in Washington, DC, the Douglas Development Building nearby at the corner of 7th St. and New York Ave. NW, and the parking lot between the two buildings which will contain a heated tent. The Art of Change will feature five stages of visual and performing arts, multiple dance floors, fire dancing and live music. Food and Bar: The main cafe bar will accept credit cards, however all others will be CASH ONLY! Food will be available for purchase on site.

In the spirit of community organizing and collaboration that President-elect Obama has come to represent, The Art of Change is being planned in collaboration with a number of supporting organizations. These include DC Burners, Dance Afire, Bethesda Theatre, Cultural Attaché, Washington Project for the Arts, 4&9 Productions LLC, Brightest Young Things, The Pink Line Project, Capitol Riverfront BID, and Pecha Kucha.

Admission: Tickets for the event will be $50*. This is an 18+ event and IDs will be checked at the door. Tickets are on sale at www.artists-ball.org.

The week of November 15-22, 2008 will mark the launch of FotoWeek DC, the first annual gathering of a diverse and wide-ranging photography community in the nation's capital, including photographers, museums, universities and all those involved in the profession across the metro D.C. area.

The Warehouse Gallery will host the photographs of famed muralist Byron Peck. Come see his work in a different medium.

And then travel the city to check out the PIX/TOUR, curated by Molly Ruppert. The Pix/Tour project of FotoWeekDC is showing the work of area photographers at 50 bars, clubs, restaurants, theaters, and shops around DC.
Pix/Tour brings art to the people who are out and about. See the art of photography in Dupont, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, 14th Street.

**Correction about the “End of Nature” Show Poster - submitted by Homer Yost
The sculpture of the Llama on the upper lefthand corner of the poster for the End of Nature is by Homer Yost, not by Paul Rhymer, as credited. The Llama sculpture is part of a pair of animal sculptures that were submitted for the show. The other one was Resting Lamb. Both are sculptures of my farm animals. The two sculptures by Homer Yost that are in the exhibition are large relief sculptures titled "Home" and "Ocean Springs-Biloxi Bridge." Both depict destruction that I witnessed in Bilxoi, Mississippi after Hurrican Katrina. - Homer Yost

Two new exhibits at Warehouse: Kristin Holder and RISD Aumni show

The Last Next is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Washington-based artist Kristin Holder.  Works from 2002 until the present will be included in the exhibition, including a site-specific wall drawing.  In recent years Holder has been the recipient of the Second Place Trawick Prize, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and a one-year fellowship from the British Academy in Rome.  Her work is included in several public and private collections.

The wall drawing is made by using the actual dimensions of the wall to establish the scale. Working freehand, two circles are drawn side by side touching in the middle of the wall and then each touching the left- and right-hand sides of the wall.  Inside each of the circles are drawn isometric cubes. Using a cubic fractal called a Menger Sponge, cubes within cubes are drawn until the middle point of the circles is reached. The first phase of the drawing utilizes lines and the second plays on mass.
 
Executing the formula of a Menger Sponge on a mass yields a “mass-less mass”.  The wall plays a critical role in determining the size and density of the forms. Working from the center point of each circle, powdered graphite is applied to the wall directly and rubbed into its surface. All of the wall’s irregularities, damage or remains from previous uses are equalized through this process. The graphite normalizes the history of the wall, while making it more evident through the material’s luminescence. Two solid cubes emerge through this process, different in size, perspective and perceived weight.
 
The title of the wall drawing is indebted to Albrecht Dürer’s Melencholia I.  In this famous print there is a mysterious polyhedron and a brooding muse, symbolizing the intellectual situation (and snare) of the artist.  The number I in the title probably represents the first (and lowest) tier of artistic creativity:  the imagination.  The next is reason and the third, and highest, is spirit.  On the left-hand side of the wall drawing the polyhedron is shown from the point of view of the muse (her) and on the right from the point of view of the Dürer (his).

50 area RISD Aumni show their art - paintings, sculpture, video, photography.

RISD DC/Baltimore Biennial 2007, an exhibition of art and design work featuring local alumni from The Rhode Island School of Design. The show features recent work by RISD alumni who graduated between 1950-2006, and who now live and work in the Washington Metropolitan area. The works are representative of the careers alumni have pursued after studying at RISD and include fine art and design:  drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, ceramics, graphic design, architectural design, new media, and more.  All work will be for sale and a portion of sales will be donated to the RISD Diversity Scholarship for the purposes of providing tuition assistance to minority students.

Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877, is located in Providence, Rhode Island. It has earned a worldwide reputation as the preeminent art and design college in the U.S.  There are over 450 alumni currently living and working in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area, and 21,000 alumni around the world.

The Warehouse Complex and Warehouse Gallery has been a center for visual art, film, theater and music in Washington, DC for more than 13 years. The Washington Post has called The Warehouse “an avant-garde Kennedy Center”. The Grate Project - A new series of large-scale public paintings by Kelly Towles Seeking to create large scale paintings that will exist in the public realm, Kelly Towles is creating murals that will completely cover the roll-down security grates at One World Fitness, outside the artist studios at 926 N Street in Blagden Alley, and at the Black Cat nightclub. Re-vitalizing these grates into dynamic contemporary artworks, The Grate Project is intended to further dialogue about the nature of street art and public art work, while enhancing DC's street-scapes. Kelly will be creating The Grate Project public paintings throughout September at the following locations:

Art Romps the Night at Warehouse

Art Romp 20 opened last Friday night at the Gallery at Warehouse with a packed house of artists and patrons. One had to squeeze their way through the crowd to see art on the three levels of the gallery. It was a great way to start the visual arts season in DC. Some of the best things in life seem to happen by chance.

Chance is the latest project by Jane Jerardi - a set of video-dance shorts and a public art project that considers the luck of being in the "right place at the right time." Chance will focus on the everyday coincidences that go mostly unnoticed, but create beautiful relationships between diverse people. Imagine this: on an early fall night in DC, eerie and beautiful dance videos will be projected on the outside of buildings. Those passing by will walk downtown and be stopped by huge images of dance and light overhead. It'll be about bringing startling and beautiful art to everyday places. It's first appearance will be at The Warehouse for ArtRomp on Sept 7 after sunset. Look for it in the parking lot - along with the cookout.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School

As part of Art in Heat there will be a Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School this Saturday night at the Warehouse. Hosted by Elvis, the “Red King” and featuring Bambi Galore and Lil' Dutch. The show starts at 7 and drawing continues until 11:30. There will be drawing contests, drink specials, and everyone is invited to stay after Dr. Sketchy for karaoke with Elvis.

How is Dr. Sketchy's different from a normal life drawing class?

In normal life classes, silent students sit in a silent room and draw a bored, oft-uninteresting model. In Dr. Sketchy's we've got bodacious burlesque queens as models. We've got ridiculous art contests (best incorporation of a woodland animal? Best imagined costume?), good music and flashy prizes. We've got a selection of posh beverages- alcoholic and not- available to buy.

At Dr. Sketchy's, we don't care if you picked up a pad yesterday or 50 years ago. Come to drink or to draw. We're happy to have you.

What mediums can I use?

All dry mediums are okay, as are dip pens and a neat watercolour sets. Oil paints, messy mediums and stinky mediums are not okay. Please don't cause a mess. Sharpen your pencils over the garbage can.

Are there easles? Tables? Sketchpads?

The Warehouse has some tables. All seatings' available first come, first served

Warehouse Feels DC Tax Pressure

More and more art spaces are feeling the squeeze from DC's tax assessments. Read Jessica Gould's article in the City Paper.

No show last night

I didn't have a chance to go to the opening of "No Representation" or "Supple" last night. It would be good to hear from those who did. Wedding bells were pealing for some of my friends as hubbie and I headed to an early wedding reception in Georgetown which lasted way past our bedtime hour. I did get to artDC earlier in the day to hear the lecture on the collecting mystique. Before 5pm, I managed to sneak a peak at the Warehouse Gallery shows. What caught my eye was work by Rex Weil, Pat Goslee, Ellyn Weiss, J. Belmar, Robin Rose, Adam Fowler, Mary Early, Laura Lukaszewski and Kevin Kepple. There's lots more good work and I'll be going back to take another look. I loved going up the inside steps of Warehouse Gallery with the ancient looking walls. The place exudes history, age, creativity, and intrigue. It's a great space to display art. J. T. Kirkland at Thinking About Art says he will have some professional shots of the show done soon by photographer and friend Greg Staley. Greg is a great guy to work with and an excellent professional photographer in DC. Anybody got links to pics from Sat. night's opening?
