Zenith Gallery shows the mettle, musings and craftsmanship of women working in wood in this exhibition, spotlighting two seasoned sculptors. The Spirit of Wood with its mix of wall and freestanding art opens at the Eleven Eleven Sculpture Space at 1111 Pennsylvania Avenue NW om May 25 with a June 22 artist reception.

Katie Dell Kaufman and Lynda Smith-Bugge subtle and understated craftsmanship brings out the beauty and soul of wood. Whether using wood in its natural form or found objects constructed of wood, they both create a serenity and timelessness in their art. While Katie’s work, made from existing pieces, reflects a ritualistic and ceremonial nature, be it ancient Oriental or early American, Lynda’s, crafted from rare pieces found in nature, expresses the purity and spirit of wood in its original form  - Zenith founder/director and artist Margery E. Ryan Hoover, Jessica van Brakle and Lina Vargas De La Hoz @ Hamiltonian

Concurrent exhibitions by three Hamiltonian Fellows, Ryan Hoover, Jessica van Brakle and Lina Vargas De La Hoz at Hamiltonian on view through June 18th, 2011.

Fusing Mid-Century modernist furniture with 1960's mainframe computers, Ryan Hoover presents a showroom of large, physical objects that make tangible the networks to which he is tied.  Inside his sleek yet awkward furnishings, Hoover implements Arduino micro-controllers that process data pulled from his email accounts, social networking sites and geolocation sharing sites.  The data displayed on the sculpture is updated every few minutes based on Hoover's activity within his networks.  Ryan Hoover is at once furniture designer and computer engineer, creating outmoded yet current appliances that offer information about him, and the many arteries to which he is connected.

Sourcing 19th Century German Master Landscape drawing, Jessica van Brakle presents a new series of paintings that contain elements of contemporary man-made construction equipment in lieu of natural elements.  This act of substitution questions the role of industrialized technology in the manufacturing of our contemporary landscape.  van Brakle's use of draftsmanship and seemingly incomplete drawing pushes her work to a new realm.  The linear outlines of the landscape become an armature for ideas about essence and potential extinction.  Stripped down to a skeletal level, the construction cranes become symbols of power, growth, and the possible "paved paradise" of the twentieth century.

Lina Vargas De La Hoz's latest work is a continuation of Umziehen Umzug, a series of sculptural installations and performances that show the transformation of clothes from objects to space.  Vargas De La Hoz presents "jacket-tents," specifically constructed for teenagers and businessmen.  The "jacket-tents" utilize space as a medium to pose questions about the way individuals cope with their fraught surroundings.  In her latest work, Vargas De La Hoz is using the human body to address the politics of space, architecture and human relationships, and continues to explore the ambivalence of and oscillation between body and space. By using seemingly everyday objects to transform an individual's physical presence within a space, Vargas creates experiences that are at once tactile and visual.  Performances of Lina Vargas De La Hoz's new work will take place:

The Final Girl is an exhibition meditating on the conventions of the horror and psychedelic film within the context of a video store installation. The show includes an exhibition of works in various mediums, a video viewing lounge, and a video store where visitors can rent DVD compilations and standalone DVDs of various artists' video works surrounding the show's premise.

The Final Girl explores themes of feminism in the electronic visual age, exploiting cinematic conventions of the horror genre, which is notoriously known for its ambiguous treatment of the female narrative center. Instead of focusing on horror and psychedelia as tools for populist consensus and social anxiety, the exhibition will raise questions about these genres' grotesque and celebratory treatment of the female body.

Art Whino returns in 2011 for the second edition of G40. The first G40 art summit in 2010 compounded artistically explosive cultures from all over the world and brought them to the DC metro area. By bringing all of these cultures from throughout the world to one place it allowed the visitor to be fully immersed in over 2000 works by 500 artists organized by floors corresponding to their cultural hubs.

This year G40 explores not cultures but the genres which are on the forefront of creative transitions and growing in large scale with hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the world. Some of these genres include Customized collectibles, Skateboard Art, Stencil, Wheat Paste and 3D Installations.

The G40 Art Summit is a unprecedented experience in the art world with its scale and caliber of artists from around the world. This year the summit comes to the city next to the U street corridor taking over an entire 25,000 sqft building and showcasing art on all of it 4 floors.  From over twenty artists showcasing 16’ Murals to traditionally displayed artwork the summit will definitely have sensory overload requiring multiple trips to take in all the treats for the eyes.

Old Fashioned New Media uses technology to investigate the disparate themes of nature, human interaction and the development of tools used to document our lives and communicate. The exhibition features four artists - Andy Holtin, Chandi Kelley, Jamie O’Shea and Christine Buckton Tillman. The artists work in vastly different ways and entertain a variety of concepts, but each uses technology – outmoded and new – to meditate on interaction, surveillance and communication.

Old Fashioned New Media was organized by Karyn Miller who oversees the Flashpoint Gallery and is the Director of Visual Arts for Cultural Development Corporation.

The Old Print Gallery announces a new show, from June 10- July 8, 2011, entitled Line & Shadow. The exhibit features a selected collection of prints by early 20th century and contemporary artists, all skilled in the use of line and the depiction of light. For these artists, their etched and engraved lines define the architectural parameters of a room, a face, a body, or a landscape, which in turn create a supporting structure for light. By illuminating their compositions, the artists achieve the illusion of three-dimensionality and bestow upon their prints depth, a sense of time, and emotion.

Featured in this show are artists Eric Goldberg, Antonio Frasconi, Matt Phillips, Steven E. Walker, Larry Welo, Ilse Schreiber Noll, Armin Landeck, Sarah Sears, Karen Whitman, Alex Zwarenstein, Bruce Waldman, Ellen V. Winkler, Joseph Essig, and Brad Widness.

The gallery will celebrate the opening of Line & Shadow with an evening reception on Friday, June 10, 2011, from 5-8pm at the Old Print Gallery. The opening reception is free and all are welcome and encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be offered and the new collection will be on display.

This year the summit comes to the city next to the U street corridor taking over an entire 25,000 sqft building and showcasing art on all of it 4 floors.  From over twenty artists showcasing 16’ Murals to traditionally displayed artwork the summit will definitely have sensory overload requiring multiple trips to take in all the treats for the eyes.

For millennia, artists have used their talents to express thoughts and emotions deeply personal, as well as reflecting their reactions to the world around them.  In light of this, The Jerusalem Fund Gallery invited 11 artists from around the U.S. including Rajie Cook, Mona El-Bayoumi, Najat El-Khairy, Elena Farsakh, Adib Fattal, John Halaka, Michael Keating, Ellen O’Grady, Ammar Qusaibaty, Mary Tuma and Helen Zughaib to create a work of art reflecting their perceptions of the separation wall in Palestine.  Interpreted in painting, sculpture, video, photography, porcelain and other media, each artist’s work speaks in a unique voice to this issue.

Melchus Davis teaches painting and drawing at Ellington.  His art ranges from water colors, acrylic, and oils to mixed media.  His subjects and themes include landscapes, cityscapes, and figurative compositions, with techniques reflecting his study of Impressionism and Neo Expressionism.

Mike Easton is chair of the Visual Arts Department at Ellington.  He has completed numerous commissions, received awards, and has traveled extensively.  He discovered that the proper use of African American subject matter is rooted in and intrinsic to quintessential American themes.  His influences include the Mexican artist, Diego Rivera who incorporated social and historical commentary and critique into his art.

Bill Harris is a founding faculty member of "Workshops for Careers in the Arts", which later became The Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he has taught since 1975.  Over a 42 year career in public school teaching in the DC Public School System, he has taught every grade from pre-K to 12th grade.

Rod Little is an accomplished Informational Graphics Specialist and Illustrator with over 20 years experience in both Print and Web news media.  His imaginative and visual skills are demonstrated in a broad spectrum of informational graphics that include scientific and technical diagrams, illustrations, and logo design.

Jacqueline Maggi, has had solo exhibitions in Paris, New York, Havana, and Spain and has participated in numerous juried group shows nationally and internationally.  Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana and in many private collections.  She has been an instructor at Ellington for the past 11 years.

DC Arts Collaboration Explores Healing 10 Years after September 11th     
Washington, DC - May 11, 2011 - Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts announces the launch of The 9/11 Arts Project - A collaboration of artists, social activists, non-profits, and interfaith groups in the Washington metropolitan area that explores individual, community, and global healing 10 years after 9/11.

In light of recent news and the upcoming 10-year anniversary, conversation about the impact and aftermath of 9/11 is ubiquitous. The 9/11 Arts Projectis positioned to provide a local forum for extending that dialogue, sparking community engagement, creative expression, and a healing discourse.  Initiated by Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts, a DC nonprofit arts, health, and education organization, the citywide project will kick off a "year of healing," with multi-venue project events to take place around the anniversary and throughout the year (9/2011-9/2012).

Events and programs will span creative genres including dance and literary performances, art exhibitions, facilitated dialogues, concerts, theatre, interfaith services, film screenings, ... etc., and will focus on such themes as social justice, multiculturalism, religious tolerance, art activism, individual healing, national trauma, and community engagement-to name a few.

Local social activist groups, galleries, fine artists, community groups, interfaith leaders, writers, non-profits, dance troupes, poets, theaters, and musicians are now being invited to join the project by sharing their unique voices and contributing a program or event.

The project is supported by an Advisory Committee of local arts leaders, social activists, and grief experts, and a Honorary Committee including: Councilmember Jack Evans;Judy A. Greenberg, Director of The Kreeger Museum; Dr. George Halasz,Expert in Trauma Transmission; Imam Yahya Hendi, President of Clergy Beyond Borders; Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton; Philippa Hughes of The Pink Line Project; Reverand Dr. Clark Lobenstine, Executive Director of The Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington; Jack Rasmussen, Director of American University Museum; Dr. Siddharth Shah, Expert in Psychosocial Trauma; Andy Shallal of Busboys & Poets; and Brigadier General Wilma Vaught, President of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.

Strathmore presents The Baltimore Watercolor Society’s 2011 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition, on view through May 21, 2011 in the Mansion at Strathmore.  The exhibition displays 95 original pieces of the finest in watercolor from Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.  These works, selected by juror John Salminen, come from a larger pool of 435 applicants. 

Founded in 1885, the Baltimore Watercolor Society is the third oldest organization in the country devoted to the use of watercolor as a painting medium.  The juror of this year's show, John Salminen, scaled the heights of the watercolor world in recent years with over 190 awards in national and international exhibitions. He will lead a spring workshop for BWS “Abstraction through Design” at The Howard County Center for the Arts.

The Washington D.C. area has become international renowned as an emerging center of glass art. Irena Chambers displays her landscape oil paintings at Westover Branch library through the month of May. Lithuanian-born, Irena's work includes still lifes, figures, and abstracts, but this exhibit highlights landscape paintings from the farm areas of the Appalachian mountains in nearby Pennsylvania. Ms. Chambers says she is "impressed and fascinated by the swathes of color and geometric shapes created by the farmers as well as by nature," and finds inspiration in the ever-changing landscape, depending on the point of view, the weather, the time of year, and the time of day. Stop by at Westover to lose yourself in one of Irena Chamber's paintings - now through the end of May.

This weekend, the streets of Bethesda will host 140 artists who specialize in fine art including painting, photography, jewelry, furniture, sculpture, glass, printmaking and more. 

Partake in this one-of-a-kind shopping experience and enjoy live entertainment and Bethesda's delectable eateries including Mamma Lucia, Union Jack's, BlackFinn American Saloon, Yamas Mediterranean Grill and Haagen Dazs.

National Harbor, MD. Seattle-based oil painter, Chris Sheridan, opens his solo show this June at Art Whino Gallery (www.artwhino.com). The opening reception is on Saturday, June 18th, from 6pm-midnight. The exhibit runs from June 17th to July 12th.

Chris Sheridan's show Shadows, Persona, and Trickery takes an in-depth look at magic and religion, their symbolism and ritual, how they played a role in building our early societies, and the disconnect between these theories and beliefs and contemporary modes of thinking. Deeply psychological, laced with multiple layers of meaning and references to the trickster archetype, the work also explores the manipulative quality found in us all. Also hidden in the work is the artist's search for the soul, which he believes is the construct that holds all of these ideas together in our collective unconscious.

Celebrate the installation of Durrett's iconic public artwork, Sweet, on Saturday, May 14th in the Petworth neighborhood.

Nekisha, a Petworth-based artist, designed the large scale, two-dimensional piece installed on the exterior façade of the 3Tree Flats building. She describes the piece: “Her hovering head one story tall, a young woman looks coolly over her Georgia Avenue with one bold, yellow bubbly adjective in a thought cloud over her flowing locks -- Sweet. She looks toward the street observing traces of the past, the vitality of the present and future, and the prideful spirit of her evolving community.” 

Cultural Development Corporation organized the project in partnership with JAIR LYNCH Development Partners and AHD Inc. The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities awarded CuDC a 2011 Public Art Building Communities grant to fund the project. JAIR LYNCH Development Partners and AHD Inc provided matching funds to support the project.

This IS Hawai'i - a two-site exhibition of contemporary, indigenous Hawaiian artists presented at Transformer and the NMAI - launches with a Transformer FRAMEWORK panel followed by a reception at the NMAI on Friday, May 20, 2011.

Actively exploring their indigenous Hawaiian history and its intersection with contemporary society, This IS Hawai`i artists explore – through site-specific installation, artistic actions, and public programs – what it means to be "Hawaiian" in the 21st century. Designed as a two-site exhibition, the work of Solomon Enos and Carl F. K. Pao are presented at the NMAI’s Sealaska Gallery, and the work of Maika`i Tubbs is presented at Transformer, with artist Puni Kukahiko’s site-specific outdoor sculptures presented at both locations, tying the whole exhibition together. The exhibition will be presented in tandem with NMAI's annual Hawai`i Festival.

Developed by independent curator Isabella E. Hughes – with input from cultural advisor Marques Hanalei Marzan and Transformer’s Executive & Artistic Director Victoria Reis – the design and scope of this exhibition aim to challenge audiences to rethink their own understanding of Hawaiian culture by highlighting some of Hawai`i’s most dynamic contemporary artistic talents. Highlighting both Transformer’s and the NMAI’s commitment to promoting the expression of contemporary art, this presentation of This IS Hawai`i reflects an exhibition partnership that is becoming a model for collaboration among cultural organizations across the U.S. and internationally.

INDUSTRY GALLERY INTRODUCES FLEXIBLELOVE™ - ACCORDION-LIKE SEATING THAT CAN BE EXPANDED, CONTRACTED & MANIPULATED INTO DIFFERENT SHAPES - MADE FROM RECYCLED PAPER & WOOD

Industry Gallery presents FlexibleLove, opening Saturday, May 14, 2011, 6-8PM and running through July 2, 2011.  The exhibition features FlexibleLove™ furniture, a collection of seating incorporating an accordion-like, honeycomb structure, made mostly from widely-available recycled paper and wood waste, that allows the works to be easily manipulated into different shapes.  With a simple pull at either end, this durable seating can be extended to accommodate up to 20 people, manipulated in "ess" shapes, circles and irregular forms, and contracted into a single chair for easy storage.  FlexibleLove™, manufactured by Pinzaan Company Limited in Taiwan, was first developed in 2005 by Taiwanese designer furniture Chishen Shiu while a student at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.  It is now available in the United States exclusively through Industry Gallery.

"FlexibleLove weds the recycling of mundane materials with intelligent engineering and a brilliant idea to yield a WOW piece of fun design," said Industry Gallery owner Craig Appelbaum. "Once you've seen and tried FlexibleLove, you will never ever look at a chair in the same way."

The Mid City neighborhood of Washington, DC, is a hub for DC's creative community. It's also home to the 28 artists who are opening their studio doors to the public on May 21 & 22. You are invited inside artists' homes and work spaces to meet the artists, enjoy and buy art.

The Mid City Artists event offers a special opportunity for art-lovers to take a peek into the artists' creative process, connect personally with artists and learn more about how and where they make art. See the tools Robert Cole uses to craft monumental sculptures. Talk with Scott Brooks about his inspiration. Experience photography of far off destinations, paintings of vivid color and art about the African Diaspora and spirituality. There is a great diversity of work, including drawings, sculptures, paintings, prints, photographs and mixed media. Open studios offers visitors an inside view into the art world in the setting where artists make their creations.

With hot nightclubs, galleries, independent shops and fashion, Mid City is a thriving area for DC arts. Plan to spend the day to visit Mid City Artists and see the community on foot, bike or public transit. The event is 12 to 5 PM Saturday and Sunday, May 21 & 22.

Mid City Artists is a talented group of more than 40 professional artists who have banded together to promote their work and create an artists' community in a central part of the nation's capital.
