Irvine Contemporary is pleased to announce Robert Mellor’s second solo exhibition, New Scenarios, opening Saturday, May 26. Robert Mellor’s new series of paintings boldly expands his innovative fusion of hard-edge organic composition techniques and original color harmonies.
Robert Mellor, Lithe, 2007. Acrylic on canvas on panel. 48 x 40 in. The word “scenario” originally referred to the instructions on the back of painted theater scenery used as directions for actors entering a “scene.” Robert Mellor’s New Scenarios can be viewed as new propositions for visual enactment by the viewer, each work providing cues for engaging with the composition, layer by layer, edge by edge, line by line, color by color. While it can be said that any work of art comes alive as art by a viewer’s active engagement, Mellor foregrounds this relationship by composing works of arresting beauty that compel viewers to re-enact the process of composition with the artist.
In this new series of paintings, Mellor often combines references abstracted from landscape and organic forms, city scapes and architecture, Japanese woodblock prints, and cascading fabric from fashion design in totally new ways. His astonishing and original color harmonies command attention and continually reward viewers who take a contemplative pause and convert compositional space into time. Mellor is also the edge-master, sculpting visual space with his hard-edge lines and interplay of forms, working at the edge of figuration and abstraction, building paintings from multiple layers that push the works into three dimensions as substantial objects in their own right. Mellor’s New Scenarios are a set of enticements and seductions for viewers that make a bold, affirmative statement for new directions in painting today.
Robert Mellor has an MFA from Claremont University in California. He began his gallery exhibition career in Los Angeles, and now lives in works in Chatham, VA, near Washington, DC.

The Hip Hop Project
A friend sent this over to me, to share with you...
The premier of the movie The Hip Hop Project opened this past Friday. It is an incredible and inspiring documentary. Go see the movie in the next 2 weeks - because apparently if a movie doesn't make it then, they take it out of the theaters- and it would be good if this movie stuck around awhile. In the DC area, it's showing at Dupont Circle 5 Theaters, & in theaters in Silver Spring and Marlborough.
The guy responsible for the project, Scott Rosenberg, graduated from DC's Maret School. Scott's uncle is Robert Lehreman, the art collector who has an incredible collection of Cornell's...). "The Hip Hop Project is the compelling Story of a young man named Kazi, a formerly homeless teenager, who inspires a group of New York City teens to transform their stories into powerful works of art, using hip hop as a force for hope, healing, and realization of Dreams." All the money made by the movie will be going back into supporting creativity and giving hope to youth. Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah are also backing the project. You can check it out at:

Artomatic closing weekend, May 18-20
Artomatic closing weekend, May 18-20, to offer more than 50 free events: After five entertaining, engaging and eye-popping weeks of art, performances and special events, Artomatic will go out with a bang during its closing weekend, May 18-20.
Tens of thousands of people have already visited Artomatic since it opened April 13 in Crystal City, Arlington, VA, viewing works and performances by more than 700 artists and taking part in hundreds of free, fun-filled events. Closing weekend will build on that momentum, offering more than 50 free activities, from film screenings and dance performances to poetry readings and art workshops. “Artomatic 2007 has been a rousing success, and we are throwing one heck of a party to send it off,” said George Koch, chair of Artomatic. “This is one weekend you won’t want to miss.”
Highlights of the closing weekend send-off include: • more than 30 live musical performances spanning everything from acoustic to “swankfunk mostergroove;” • a hands-on mobile-making workshop for adults and kids taught by artist Paul Sikora and an Indian tantric art drawing workshop, both on Saturday, May 19; • films such as “Tumaini Letu,” an award-winning movie that documents the struggles of people who are raising AIDS orphans in Kenya, on Saturday; • spoken word performances and poetry readings on Friday and Saturday; • “Night of the Living Theatre . . . by Dead Playwrights,” a comedy theater performance that calls on dead playrights to pitch their works to Hollywood, on Saturday; • Wes Crawford's "Rhythmic Murder Mystery" on Sunday, which challenges audience members to solve a mystery set to the beat of electronic drums; and • outdoor fire performances by Capital Fire Arts and Flights of Fire on Friday and Saturday; • a mural whitewashing with artist Trinka Margua Simon on Sunday at 7 p.m. Simon, who spent about 400 hours creating her 8th floor mural, will paint over her work on Artomatic’s closing night. The event will be filmed and played in reverse. Even people who’ve already made it to Artomatic this year will want to make a return trip, said Koch, noting that “with so many great, free activities, there is even more to see and do.”
Visitors will also want to be sure and check out one new addition to Artomatic — a display of historical patent documents on the sixth floor. Exhibited by patent researcher Randy Rabin, who rescued them from a shredder, the documents show patent drawings for inventions such as a Wright brothers flying machine, a rocket by space pioneer Robert Goddard and an electric light by Thomas Edison. The new exhibit is fitting because Artomatic is being held on two floors of a building formerly occupied by U.S. patent and trademark workers.
Held regularly since 1999, Artomatic features 90,000 square feet of paintings, sculptures, photography and other creative work. The event, which runs through May 20, is being held on the 6th and 8th floor of an office building at 2121 Crystal Drive, in Crystal City, Arlington, VA. The location is within walking distance to the Crystal City Metro station. Free garage parking is available evenings and weekends across the street from Artomatic (next to the Chevy Chase awnings), but visitors are strongly encouraged to take Metro.

8th Street Stripes
What a kool way to spend the afternoon on Saturday adding to the collective field of color stripes on 8th St. NW in Penn Quarter. I was lucky enough to arrive while the music was still playing and helped to paint an orange stripe the length of the street. Carolyn Parker was passing out t-shirts to all the volunteers painting in the street. Lots of other folk, including Rachel Dickerson and Tony Gittens from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and folks from the Corcoran Gallery of Art were wielding paint rollers and pouring the buckets of paint. Here's some pics to enjoy of the days work. Mokha Laget, long time studio assistant to Gene Davis, designed the project. She did a great design which will stay on the street for the next couple of weeks.

MetroPerforms Auditions
Dozens turned out to audition for MetroPerforms. Forty-two people showed up Thursday night for the first tryouts. The program is a partnership between metro transit and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Next tryouts are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at Metro headquarters at 600 Fifth Street, NW.

In May 1987, the Corcoran School of Art, Washington Project for the Arts, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum collaborated to paint a giant color stripe scheme on 8th Street NW between D and E in honor of Gene Davis, an important artist of the color field movement and former Corcoran faculty member. Mokha Laget, long time studio assistant to Gene Davis, designed the project. Now 20 years later, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in collaboration with the Corcoran plan to recreate the 1987 project as an homage to Gene Davis with Mokha Laget as the lead artist for this project once again. She has created an alternative scheme much closer in color, rhythm, musicality and lyricism to Gene Davis’ paintings.

Both artists are using industrial materials to discuss, well... industrial materials. Paradoxically, the very materials they use, becomes their statement and their contradictions fuel their multi-layered sub-texts.
Jackson Martin
Jackson Martin uses steel, glass, and burlap to represent the human propensity toward order and control and its relationship between the natural and the cultural. He alternately uses ephemeral materials, such as trees, soil, water and light that represent uncertainty and the unpredictablity of the world around him. His enclosures, acting as cultural elements attempt to hold and embrace the natural, while still being of industry. It the antithesis of good and evil, the uneasy if not forced alliance of man/man made vs natural, and of nature.
Michael Sandstrom
Michael Sandstrom alternately, explores how camouflaged political controls filter our understanding of history and relinquish our ability to accurately observe and respond to current socio-political events.
Fundamental to his formal concerns is his use of petroleum-based plastics and resins. Thought, the true currency of our time, access to petroleum is one of the most decisive factors in determining the wealth and power of a nation. The lustrous surface of resin appeals to our penchant for "beauty" seducing the viewer to draw near. It acts as a barrier, restricting the viewer's access to embedded objects. Resin, becomes a metaphor for government, protecting the viewer from the "harmful truths" beneath the surface.
Both Jackson Martin and Michael Sandstrom are recent graduates of MICA and both live in Baltimore, MD. Michael Sandstrom, recently won a Fulbright Scholarship to Berlin.

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with the Washington Nationals, the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, and Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum, P.C., seeks an artist or artist team to design and create a suspended public art installation along the main concourse of the new Washington Nationals baseball stadium. The goal of this public art project is to provide an exciting arts enhancement to the interior of the ballpark while celebrating the spirit of our national pastime. The work will be visible along the main concourse, across the field from Baseball Plaza, and from street level on the south side of the ballpark. The total budget for the project is $200,000.

Project 4
is proud to present Navigable Zones by Puerto Rican artist Nayda Collazo-Llorens. In this site-specific exhibition organized by Independent Curator Laura Roulet the entire gallery space will be hyper-linked as a multi-media installation. Evoking themes of displacement, navigation and language these installations seek to examine Collazo-Llorens’s dual cultural existence as a Puerto Rican living and working in the United States. Her paintings, drawings, text and video act as interconnected systems to form a non-linear mindscape. Employing repetition, variation and mapping the work explores the mind’s internal systems that perceive, order and remember external environments. At times autobiographical, Collazo-Llorens’s artwork is an evocative hybrid of science and poetry. Her paintings have a post-minimalist aesthetic. Rorschach-like ink drops mark the canvases in grid patterns. Connections among the dots are then mapped and delineated, gradually building up a surface that is both organic and systematic. Her drawings reflect an interest in private, invented language; how mark making crosses over between letters, symbols and abstraction. The videos further explore notions of perception and the mind's conscious/subconscious interaction using text, imagery and sound.
Nayda Collazo-Llorens was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1968. She currently lives and works in New York. She received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA from New York University. Recent solo exhibitions include Route/Journal at LMAK projects, Williamsburg, NY; Mindscapes, Space Other, Boston, MA and Roaming, CSV Cultural Center, New York. She has exhibited widely in group exhibitions in the U.S., Europe and Puerto Rico, including None of the Above, Contemporary Work by Puerto Rican Artists, Real Art Ways, Hartford, CT, traveling to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan; Painting as Paradox, Artists Space, New York, and Here & There, Six Artists from San Juan, El Museo del Barrio, New York, traveling to the Blaffer Gallery, Houston, TX. Nayda Collazo-Llorens was awarded a grant from Urban Artist Initiative, New York City in 2006.

Ian and Jan: The Undiscovered Duo of the Washington Body School
Local artists Jeffry Cudlin and Meg Mitchell respond to the recent ColorField Remix mania with a upcoming parody exhibit at the D.C. Arts Center. Mitchell and Cudlin (who is also an arts reviewer for the City Paper) created the personas of Ian and Jan, supposedly an undiscovered duo of performance artists who exhibited alongside the Color School brush-wielders in the 1960s and '70s. The exhibition features photographs, drawings and videos of the couple in action. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a mockumentary video about the undiscovered duo featuring D.C. art superstars like Corcoran curator Jonathan Binstock, artist Sam Gilliam and Modern Art Notes blogger Tyler Green. Exploring the duality in Japanese art today, Transformer is partnering with Shigeko Bork Mu Project to present "Big in Japan" a cross-town collaborative exhibition featuring a diverse array of contemporary Japanese artists who interpret and respond to the tradition and popular culture of Japan.
Transformer presents Not Only A, But Also B - featuring work by Aki Goto, Misaki Kawai, Chikara Matsumoto, Kazuyuki Takezaki, and Soju Tao (work pictured here), each embodying the tensions affecting a new generation of contemporary artists in Japan. Not only A, But Also B is guest-curated by Atsuko Ninagawa, curator, and partner of TAKEFLOOR404, Toyko, Japan.

This annual competition, sponsored by local arts patron, Carol Trawick, awards $14,000 to artists based in DC, MD and VA. One artist will receive the Grand Prize of $10,000. Paintings by the finalists will be on exhibit at the Fraser Gallery. The 2007 Bethesda Painting Awards will be juried by Dr. Brandon Fortune, Professor W.C. Richardson and Professor Tanja Softic.
Dr. Brandon Brame Fortune is the Associate Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the National Portrait Gallery. She has spent the last three years researching contemporary portraiture, and was the Gallery’s coordinator for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. She graduated from Agnes Scott College, and received her masters and doctorate degrees in art history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1999, she was co-curator of the exhibition Franklin & His Friends: Portraying the Man of Science in Eighteenth-Century America and author of the accompanying publication.
Professor W.C. Richardson is a Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Maryland. Richardson received his BFA, with Highest Honors, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his MFA in Painting from Washington University at St. Louis. His most recent one person shows were at Loyola University, Baltimore, MD, March 2004; Fusebox, Washington, DC, June 2003; Fusebox, Washington, DC, July 2002; Baumgartner Gallery, New York, NY, September 2000. Richardson received Maryland State Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowships in 2002, 1998, 1987 and 1981. He was commissioned by the architectural firm Cesar Pelli and Associates to create painted triptychs for the new North Terminal of Ronald Reagan National Airport.
Professor Tanja Softic is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Richmond. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting in 1988 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking in 1992 at Old Dominion University. Softic was a recipient of the 1996 National Endowment for the Arts/ Southern Arts Federation Visual Artist Fellowship and Soros Foundation—Open Society Institute Exhibition Support Grant in 1997. She recently participated in the 12th International Print Triennial in Cracow, Poland and won a first prize at the The 5th Kochi International Triennial Exhibition of Prints, Ino-cho Paper Museum in Kochi, Japan in 2002.

Portrait of Chuck by the 4Traits
My sculptor friend Chuck Baxter was one of the artists who had their portrait drawn by the www.4traits.com at the Artomatic opening last Friday. Here's a picture of the drawing the four artists in 4traits did. Four people sit across a table from four artists. The artists work on the portrait of the person seated across from them for about 5 minutes. When the 5 minutes are up, the person and their portrait move on to the next artist, like an artistic assembly line. The next artist picks up where the last artist left off, continuing to build on the previous artist's work, adding lines, shapes, shadows, texture, color...until all four artists have worked on all four portraits.
4traits are Assembly Line Portraits created by a group of four emerging artists from Washington, DC: Brandon Bloch, Alex Slater, Rob Stelboum, and Ming Yi Sung Zaleski. These four artists come from diverse backgrounds, with artistic talent in different media (graphic, video, textile, illustration)… but they all bring their strengths together to create tag-team portraits as a collective group. This exhibition at Project 4 is being held concurrently with Ron Desmett's lecture at the Renwick Gallery of Art in Washington DC as part of the James Renwick alliance's Distinguished Artist Series. Ron and his wife Kathleen Mulcahy will also be giving a glass blowing demonstration and workshop at DC Glassworks in Hyattsville, MD. Ron Desmett's opaque, black glass "Lidded Trunk Vessels" challenge common perceptions and applications of the material. The process consists of blowing glass into molds comprised of wetted tree trunks that must be pulled away while the glass is still molten. This spectacular achievement conquers the overhangs involved and masters the split-second timing required in the process. Each sculpture is formally unique but the series of work shares an interiority where beauty resides within the dark angular recesses of the forms. Ron Desmett received an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Ron and his wife, artist Kathleen Mulcahy, imagined, developed and helped to build the Pittsburgh Glass Center, an internationally recognized public glass institution. They have been named Permanent Artists in Residence at the PGC in honor of their outstanding achievements and dedication to the arts. Ron has won numerous awards including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and the Fulbright Foundation.

Big Night Tonight In The DC Area
with all the wonderful art openings. I hiked up to Farragut West to take the Blue Line Metro to Artomatic. Walking and commuting time got me there in a little less than an hour. The train had a few jumps and starts as we waited at each stop. Hmmmm....my auto is looking better for the next visit. When I arrived at 2121 Crystal Drive there were two great volunteer artists at the desk ready with maps and helpful information about the night’s events especially how to find a particular artist. I would have been lost without them. The exhibition space is divided into zones - blue, red, yellow. With a map in hand, I went looking for Artomatic found object artist, Chuck Baxter. I spent an hour + on the 6th floor meandering through the art exhibitions. It was early and I missed a lot of the artists who were just beginning to arrive with interesting Hors d'oeuvres and beverages. Tonight was Meet The Artists Night and I did meet up with a few artist friends and took some pictures of the artists work that I missed. I had too little time and so much art to see. I finally caught up with Chuck Baxter who took me for a glimpse of the 8th floor before I left the building and my metro ride back to DC. The space on the 8th floor is a great open place to exhibit art. I saw a mural in progress along one of the walls. That's another day's adventure for me. MEET THE ARTISTS
Come mix, mingle and meet some of the area’s most creative talents during Meet the Artists Night at Artomatic.
From 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday, May 4, many of the artists who are showing their work or performing at Artomatic will be on hand to talk about their work, discuss what inspires them and answer your questions. More than 700 people are participating in this year’s Artomatic, including 400 visual artists.
People who come to Artomatic on the evening of May 4 will also be able to take in a full schedule of free events including films, poetry, music and fire performances.
Live music will kick off at 7 p.m. and run through midnight, with performances by djesben, Koshari, Matt Wilschke, Dead Men's Hollow and Ephemeral Sun.
Also at 7 p.m., “Jolene Sugarbaker The Trailer Park Queen,” will teach attendees how to whip up tasty budget treats and recipes via a film shot straight from her “Trailer Park Test Kitchen.”
Capital Fire Arts, a Washington, D.C.-based performance company, will be on hand to wow the crowds with their unique style of fire dancing at 9pm in the Courtyard. ample free parking

Don't miss Aziza Claudia Gibson-Hunter's presentation on advancing your career and achieving success as an artist that will address those critical questions and more. Ms. Gibson-Hunter, co-founded Black Artists of DC (BADC) an organization which supports talented artists in the DC area by providing opportunities to learn about the "art industry" and successful ways to interface with it, and organizing exhibitions and workshops and other activities for the group and for individual artists. She is an arts educator and a widely exhibited artist. Formerly a professor of printmaking at Howard University, she also gained entrepreneurial experience from her successful greeting card business.

Kate Moss Prints by Chuck Close
On May 31st, 2007, Christie's London will auction a set of six Kate Moss prints by Chuck Close printed and published by Adamson Editions, Washington, DC.
Yuka Yamaji, head of photography for the auction house, called Moss "a cultural icon and arguably the most influential model of our day."
Adamson Editions published the series of six pigment print images of model Kate Moss, in an edition of 25 prints in 2005. The images were shown for the first time at Adamson Gallery, as part of an exhibition of Close's work, entitled "A Couple of Ways of Doing Something." The Kate Moss prints were also exhibited at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and the SungKok Art Museum in Seoul, Korea. The prints were featured in the Steidl publication Adamson Atelier that accompanied the traveling exhibition.
Originally commissioned for a special edition of W Magazine, the images show Moss not as the subject of a fashion pictorial, but as an artist's model. Close's daguerreotypic method reveals and exaggerates the aesthetic imperfections of his subjects, in the case of Moss, an iconoclastic beauty, the effect is that of a portrait not of a mannequin, but of a woman. In the same way that typical images of Moss downplay her flaws, Close's images underscore them. Freckles, lines, and curves that are typically hidden in the milieu of fashion photography are revealed here, resulting in strong images that call into question ideals of aesthetics, icons and portraiture.

Since the late 1960's, he has been changing our impressions and expectations of portraiture as a form of representation and expression. Taking a format that has arguably been present as long as art itself, Close has imbued it with new and ever shifting ideologies. Over a career that has spanned more than thirty years, Close has exhibited works at major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Tate in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
