About Hamiltonian's Current Exhibition
Hamiltonian Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Alex Kondner, Hamiltonian Fellows Ian MacLean Davis, Linda Hesh and Bryan Rojsuontikul, opening Saturday, February 20, 2010. Through the repetition of a particularly burdened word, object, material or image, each artist utilizes the visual residue of popular culture to address the roots of current sociopolitical mores.

In the series Evacuate, Alex Kondner trades in the seemingly nonessential physical attributes of traditional artist materials for disposable ones, such as play-sand and faux fur. Excerpts from historical speeches and 80's New Wave song lyrics mix to comprise the neon-colored sandy text in three paintings. In other paintings, the repeated word "evacuate" fills the surface of the canvas while screen-printed images of apocalyptic Japanese landscapes float on top. The contrasting elements of Kondner's pieces bring to mind the blur of today's frenetic visual culture.

Ian MacLean Davis appropriates imagery from mass-produced sources drawn from fine art and pop culture. Davis then distorts and layers these images to depict how technology and information saturation affect our memory and perception of gender. Two paintings, Golem and Lithe, bring to mind clichéd male and female bodies from popular media. Pours of syrupy paint are covered by overlapping threads of viscous enamel, masking an underlying image and portraying the murky lens with which the two sexes view each other.

In the Garden is the tale of original sin retold by Linda Hesh using apples laser-etched with the word "EVIL." Hesh places the glossy, imprinted apples in various scenarios to photograph, including EVIL on a shelf amongst marred Disney princess figurines, EVIL in an artist's studio, EVIL in proximity to a serpent, and the moment just before EVIL is bitten by a little girl. The EVIL apple installed in different settings conjures up the complexities of how we view gender. Hesh also presents the jarred EVIL apples freeze-dried or preserved in denatured alcohol as a metaphor for the upholding of ancient stereotypes of male and female roles. A time-lapsed video depicts the EVIL apple disintegrating, which represents the breakdown of gender disparity.

In Words in Space, Bryan Rojsuontikul creates minimalist works by spray painting text on canvases faced with tiny foam balls that make up the underlayment of linoleum tile. One work consists of the phrase "Art is Cancer" repeated on canvases differing only in their background colors. Below the canvases, 80 silver floor tiles reflect the phrase back at the viewer. Rojsuontikul relates this to the subtle evolution and growth of art, which he believes cannot be hindered or rationalized.

This exhibition will run from February 20, 2010 until March 20, 2010.

A juried indoor and outdoor exhibition co-sponsored by the Washington Sculptors Group and Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park & Arts Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate

Washington, DC: The Washington Sculptors Group (WSG) announces the opening of Constructed Place, a juried indoor and outdoor exhibition that examines contemporary relationships between viewer and artwork. Selected works demonstrate varying ways of engaging, immersing, and creating a place for viewers, while also creatively constructing spaces within and around which the viewer must navigate both physically and conceptually. The exhibition is being held at Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park & Arts Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, and will be on view from March 20 until May 8, 2010.

An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, March 20 from 6 pm - 9 pm in conjunction with an Annmarie Garden “After Hours” event. It will feature brief remarks by juror Megan Rook-Koepsel, a performance by artist Meaghan Harrison, and an award ceremony. Rook-Koepsel will also provide a juror’s talk on Sunday, April, 25 beginning at 2:00 pm, which will be followed by a guided tour of the sculpture park.

The WSG invited Rook-Koepsel to serve as juror for this exhibition. Speaking about her selections, she stated, “The works in the exhibition address the notion of a “constructed place” on several different levels – many are designed to actually become in themselves a constructed site such that the viewer can actually enter into and experience new spaces immersively.”

WSG member artists selected to participate in this exhibition are: Sarah Allison, Jessica Braiterman, Anthony Comes, Bobby Donovan, Jim Gallucci, Tom Greaves, Meaghan Harrison, Matt Hollis, Ron Longsdorf, Christine Sciulli, Patricia Segnan, Mike Shaffer, Foon Sham, and Al Zaruba.

PastForward / Regional Statewide MINDS WIDE OPEN

PastForward features work of four former resident Torpedo Factory artists - Kathleen Dustin, Barbara Rachko, Anne Laddon and Joyce Zipperer. This exhibition kicks off the gallery's participation in Minds Wide Open. The artists will exhibit their latest works, from Rachko's pastel paintings, Zipperer's sculptures, Dustin's polymer clay works to Laddon's oil paintings.

The Target Gallery Committee invited these four women to be a part of this special exhibition because of their continued success and critical acclaim after leaving the Torpedo Factory. The exhibition will display their latest work.

Looking for an artist to profile? Need some fresh work?  Or maybe you just want to see what's new and exciting in the region? The Mid Atlantic Artist Registry features fellowship winners in all performing, visual and literary disciplines.  Registry artists have been vetted in panel review by their own state agencies - so you can be sure of artistic excellence.  Take a little time to view video by dance, media, music and theatre artists; listen to audio from spoken word, media and music artists; read poetry, prose, plays, and other writings; and view a multitude of visual work samples from some of the finest artists in the mid-Atlantic region. Some 2,000 art works by more than 500 artists are on view in a partially empty office building in Crystal City.
And no, it isn't Artomatic. Next question.
How is it different from that regular, open-to-all art show? For one thing, "G40: The Summit" is curated. That means that, with the exception of a handful of installation artists, one man -- Shane Pomajambo of the Art Whino Gallery -- has handpicked each artist for the 75,000-square-foot exhibition. It takes up four floors and part of the lobby level. (The rest of the first floor is used for a stage and bar.)

Project 4 presents a group exhibition of works that express scenes, realities and spaces peculiarly situated away from our familiar, everyday visual experience. Artists participating in The Fantastical exhibition present works where, either by revealing idiosyncrasies of the artist’s mind or by altering commonplace appearances to create new perspectives, fantastical realms arise in conjunction with existing curiosities and tension.

While each of these artists takes inspiration from natural, experiential reality, their imagination and emotional self bends the linearity of this reality. Northwest-based draftsman Justin Gibbens takes inspiration from thickets, undergrowth and odd fauna to create brilliantly imaginative Audubon reminiscent watercolors and collages. His treatment of the paper causes these pieces to appear as if they themselves come from a distant and strange domain. Also working on paper, Los Angeles based artist Mel Kadel’s enigmatic characters traverse transcendent and cerebral spaces while encountering curious challenges of the mind and body.

Expanding on the genre of landscape, Baltimore artist Jordan Kasey and Washington DC based photographer Sophie Ruspoli both create stages where mystifying phenomena can occur. Kasey’s immersive painting, “Sunrise” depicts a serene and extraordinary land, where existence seems eerily suspended. Ruspoli, using the factual medium of the camera lens, manipulates the architectural functions of a 4 x 5 camera to capture surreal views of nature, different from what the human eye is capable of naturally perceiving. A second floor sculptural installation by Los Angeles based artist Julie Hughes physically represents an other-worldly environment inspired by such terrestrial and complex structures such as human bone and mold, adding further dimension to this exhibit’s exploration of the fantastical space that exists just beyond rational thought.

Addison/Ripley Fine Art presents a selection of new works by Washington artist, Amy Lin.

The delicate but dynamic work of Amy Lin is as sophisticated as it is fresh. Despite their apparent mechanical precision, Ms. Lin's drawings are made by hand in colored pencil and take on, literally, a life of their own, suggesting an order that might be seen in scientific visualization such as cells or moleculesor DNA modeling. As graceful as dance notation, the artist's drawings have an intelligence about them that implies natural forces. The colored pencil markings float, perfectly balanced in open, white, not negative space. They sparkle with life, with elegance and beauty and a rhythm of their own.

Ms. Lin's work finds common cause with our contemporary interest in genetics, technology, physics and even astronomy while maintaining a very human quality that celebrates the imperfect and indefinable qualities of art.  One is able to experience this work on several levels: emotional, cerebral, obsessive, and lyrical.  Drawn without a specific plan in mind, the work develops organically, yielding repetitions that range from playful to meditative to joyous, each mark suggesting the next, the finished product a remarkable surprise.

Focusing on the heaviness of day-to-day existence and her experiences with individuals whose lives' visible weight impacts her to the point of creative refuge, Kretz seeks to honor the fragility common to every human across continents and centuries.
Her highly crafted work is created in defiance of the virtual and disposable, and despite acknowledging there's a contemporary disinterestin detail-oriented modes of production. Kretz finds physical and emotional release through her handiwork, a sort of catharsis for the overwhelming interactions in life.

The first ever Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival comprises 400+ artists from 50 nations, producing more than 200 arts/advocacy events throughout 40 venues in downtown Silver Spring, over 50 hours in late April. As Larry Cox, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, said of the event: “No human expression reaches into the soul, as does art. Since our founding, art and artists have played a powerful and central role in Amnesty International’s fight for human rights as a means to further our goals.”

Included are a film festival, theater festival, dance festival, music festival, digital art festival, art installations, dozens of workshops, book readings, art exhibits, performance art and other activities, plus a dozen advocacy groups running art programming as “Festivals within the Festival.”

ALL EVENTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Norman Lear (All in the Family etc., founder of People For the American Way) has signed on as Executive Producer of the Festival. In joining the endeavor, he sent along a note to Art Festival Producer Thomas Block that said: "I couldn't admire more your idea and plan for the Human Rights Art Festival."
Lear's first act as a member of the Executive Committee was to commission spoken word artist Steven Connell to create a work based on Amnesty International's postcard actions. Connell's work has been featured on numerous national television programs, as well as at Oprah Winfrey’s celebration
of Maya Angelou’s 75th birthday. He has also performed at private events for Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Freya Grand paints the land and the sea like nature’s true confidant. Her paintings rush towards us with immense power portraying earth’s forms whether solid or liquid. Even the ghosts of her subjects in the distance are mighty in their placement, like veiled sentries.  Although we are immediately presented with imagery large and strong, the artist takes great care to have us investigate her work slowly and at close range  where we examine the spray of water, the arid crumble of rocky terrain, mist as myst and other phenomenon that evaporate and disappear into the unknown.

In the month of March a collection of Freya Grand’s stunning landscapes and seascapes of Ireland, the Galapagos Islands, Peru and Iceland will undoubtedly stir each guest as the walls of Neptune hold her memories of the enigmatic earth.

IDB Call for Proposals

IDB invites Latin American and Caribbean artists to submit proposals for an exhibition about education in natural sciences and mathematics.

The Inter-American Development Bank´s Cultural Center and Education Division invite artists from Latin America and the Caribbean to submit artwork that seeks to explore, stimulate, and propose creative and artistic alternatives in the teaching of natural sciences and mathematics. The exhibition will be held in Washington at the IDB Headquarters, from June 7 to 11, 2010.

Through the hands and eyes of the region's artists, the Bank hopes to bring attention to mathematics and natural science as an essential foundation skill for our children.

The exhibition will launch a new IDB initiative focused on creating new policies that improve a child´s ability to reach his or hers full potential in math and natural science, between the pre-primary and the secondary levels. The seminar "An Even Start: Numeracy Education in Latin America and the Caribbean" will be held concurrently with the exhibition, with participation of experts in the subject and one of the exhibiting artists. The discussion will be organized around the presentation of an overview of the status of numeracy education in the region, as well as the results of three Bank-financed initiatives.

All artists born in Latin America and the Caribbean regardless of their current place of residence are invited to submit a proposal.

Deadline to enter the competition is March 25, 2010.

Elizabeth Catlett in Mexico will present 57 prints of this extraordinary African-American artist’s work in Mexico.  A native Washingtonian, Elizabeth Catlett graduated from Howard University in 1935.  Inspired by the cultural excitement and political transformations of post-Revolutionary Mexico, Catlett moved to Mexico City in 1947, where she joined the artist's collective known as the Taller de Gráfica Popular (Workshop of Popular Graphics, or TGP), which was dedicated to the direct use of visual art in the service of social change.  This mission spoke directly to Catlett’s convictions about using her art for service to people, particularly through portraying the history and reality of African American women. The exhibition pays homage to Catlett, her artistic genius and her inspirational bi-national legacy.

Elizabeth Catlett’s cohorts at the Taller de Gráfica Popular (Workshop of Popular Graphics, or TGP) are the focus of our second exhibition Shouts from the Archive: Political Prints from the Taller de Gráfica Popular (TGP).  Founded in the summer of 1937 by Raúl Anguiano, Luis Arenal, Leopoldo Méndez and Pablo O’Higgens, TGP members and guest artists produced thousands of prints and posters during its lifespan. While their art portrayed a variety of themes, from scalding caricatures to idyllic rural scenes, the collective as a whole saw its art as catalyst for social change. This exhibition presents 39 politically oriented and visually rich works from the TGP archive at Mexico’s Academy of Arts, many of them unedited, and is organized in 7 thematic sections that include the most prevalent subjects the Workshop tackled during its tenure: Fascism, Soldiers, The Press, Horses, The City, Construction, and Workers.

Washington Project for the Arts teams up with George Washington University and journalist Kriston Capps to lead a for-credit course on arts journalism. Students will write about and engage with the DC area arts community, blogging about area artists, exhibitions in galleries, museums and their ideas about contemporary art at www.bluffjournal.com. The course will conclude with the printing of long-form journalism pieces for an original print publication, produced by the class.

Sally Levie, now a graduate of the Certificate Program at Washington Studio School, holds a BA in Visual Arts and Art History from the University of California at San Diego and a Masters in Education Degree from California State at San Jose. She served as the Chairman of the Art Department at Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, DC for 22 of the 30 years she has spent teaching art to children. For the past three years at Washington Studio School, Sally has pursued a Certificate in Painting. Sally's work has been exhibited at the University of California at San Diego; 222 Gallery, Leesburg, Virginia; Bethesda Community Center; Corcoran School of Art; The Washington Art League and Washington Studio School.

Artist Statement: My work draws heavily on observation and a direct response to images in the natural world. My overall objective is to rearrange reality in my work to attract the eye and provoke the imagination of the viewer. I like to take known objects and reconstruct them - remake them - to interpret shapes and colors. It is my goal to focus on the junctures in the geometry of objects to punctuate my interpretations and memory of the subject using small, moving, glistening areas against larger masses of color.  I paint using the relationships between colors, as well as the texture of the media, particularly the malleable thickness of oils and washes, to build up the surface and to define form. My work has been inspired by well known artists throughout history, especially the artists Diebenkorn, DeStahl, Redon, Klimt and Bonnard as well as the jewel like qualities in Celtic art.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Expert exhibitors affiliated with several photo related historical societies will offer free appraisal consultations at the 27th Annual DC Antique Photo Show Sunday March 14, 2010, at its regular venue, Holiday Inn Rosslyn/Key Bridge, 1900 N. Ft. Myer Dr., Arlington, VA 22209.

Participating in the program will be members of The Daguerreain Society, National Stereoscopic Association, The Photo Historical Societies of Canada and New England and Magic Lantern Societies, both US and UK, said Tom Rall, a director of Diverse Markets Management (DMM), a DC firm in its second year managing the show.

"Customers should bring photos with them and should ask at the entrance table to be directed to the expert exhibitors who've volunteered to participate," said Show Manager Rall, who also manages The Flea Market at Eastern Market on Capitol Hill.

The DC Antique Photo Show opens with an 8:30 AM $20 preview admission and continues 10 AM to 4 PM with a $5 public admission. Likely the longest running photo image show in the country, it features a full range of antique photo imagery, including Daguerreotypes, CDVs, stereoviews, lantern slides, tintypes, postcards, albums, movie stills, press photos and more.

Toshiko Mori, FAIA, founder and principal of Toshiko Mori Architect, discusses her work, including the Darwin D. Martin House Visitors Center. The lecture begins with a 15 minute documentary “A Girl is a Fellow Here: 100 Women Architects in the Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright", produced by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.

DC artist Michael Platt is widely recognized for his fusion of digital and conventional photography, drawing, and printmaking as a means to explore/expose the human condition - in particular, the history and experiences of African and African Diaspora culture.

Platt has recieved numerous grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and received the Mayor's Art Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts in 1999. He has public collections in many renowned institutions, including Corcoran Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, Yale University Art Gallery, Hampton University Museum, and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. In Abandoned Places, an exhibit of new works by the artist, runs through March 20.

WPA is pleased to present its third installment of Information Exchange, an informal partnership with the International Studio and Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, NY. WPA brings international curators to Washington to discuss ideas and projects in a public forum, followed by a day of one-on-one critiques or portfolio reviews with WPA member artists. The goal of the program is to expose artists and curators to each other’s work, spurring new and continuing conversations, ideas, relationships, and projects which will carry on long after the initial exchange.

Vjera Brozan (Prague, Czech Republic) is a curator and art historian. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Charles University, Prague, and fellow at tranzit, a network of autonomous initiatives in contemporary art in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. Brozan was a curator at The National Gallery Prague (2003-2004) and was a research fellow at The Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (2000-2002). She taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno (2003-2007) and now is teaching Contemporary Art at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague.

As an independent curator she has curated exhibitions and artist projects in Prague and elsewhere. Recent exhibitions include : Harun Farocki at tranzitdisplay, Prague (2009); Metaphysical – Ontological – Supertemporal– Absolut – Transcendence at JS Studio Gallery, Prague, (2008); and Invisible Things at Trafó gallery, Budapest (2007).

Rosemary Feit Covey / The Art League Selected for Minds Wide Open Launch Event on March 11

The Art League is selected as one of the regional launch sites for the statewide kick-off of MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts.

The Torpedo Factory and The Art League will host the Alexandria launch on Thursday, March 11 starting at 6:30 pm. Launch events include presentations by distinguished Torpedo Factory women alumni; a solo exhibit of award-winning artist Rosemary Feit Covey’s wood engravings in The Art League Gallery with modern dance performances inspired by her work; and the opening reception and awards presentation in The Art League Gallery for our exhibition, HerStory. Events take place in the Target Gallery and The Art League Gallery.

Visually, the goal of the artwork in The Art League exhibit “HerStory” is to honor and explore personal stories and experiences about women throughout history, as well as in the present and in the future. Artists may enter works that either express a personal story or convey a personal memory or emotion about women or what it means to be female.  They may also choose to visually covey the story of a historically famous woman or an event of importance to women.  Artists are encouraged to think creatively and symbolically while exploring this theme. Barbara Rachko, Art League alumni, and now a well-established New York artist, will jury this exhibit.

Rosemary Felt Covey’s provocative images in her “Peep and Strip Show” exhibit force the viewer into the role of voyeur, either by demanding the viewer to observe her engravings through a peep show box, or on a photographer’s light box. Suggestive rather than overtly explicit, her wood engravings subtly deal with obsession on many levels. Modern dance will be featured throughout the evening inspired by Covey’s work.

Artist Anne Marchand’s Luminous Exhibition Featured in Crystal City Space | Crystal City BID | Arlington, VA

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) - The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Vornado/Charles E. Smith is proud to announce a new art exhibition at 2231 Crystal Drive featuring the work of Washington, DC-based artist Anne Marchand. Consisting of eight large canvases, the Luminous exhibition—where art and the universe merge—will be on view until April 26, 2010.

“We are very excited that Vornado created an artistic opportunity that also showcases their newest lobby renovation,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “This collaboration is another bold example of arts, color, and culture in Crystal City that visitors, workers and residents of the area have come to expect and love.”

Inspired by the combination of colorful images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and mystical poetry, Marchand creates patterns of movement that reflect the forces of the heavens. Gestures, lines, and energetic strokes are transformed into worlds of color and exciting arcs of movement that dance across the canvases taking viewers on a journey through the cosmos into darkness, light, and back to the rhythms of the natural world. Marchand’s use of mixed media, acrylic and incorporation of texture and translucent passages of paint help create a moving and reflective exhibition.

Luminous is part of the Crystal City BID’s ARTFUL program. This new exhibition builds on the success of previous Crystal Art projects which have demonstrated the power that art can add to public spaces. Luminous is located on the recently renovated ground floor public concourse of 2231 Crystal Drive adding exceptional color to a beautiful new space. The Crystal City BID is responsible for changing how people see and perceive Crystal City, and art remains a critical means of achieving this goal by adding color, interest and conversation to the streets, sidewalks and public spaces of Crystal City.

Twenty years after fleeing his native Vietnam, Khánh Lê is in ardent pursuit of his own legend. On a stubborn quest to decode the cultural patterns of the America he now inhabits and confront the mythologies which cling to the fast-changing land he left behind, Lê raids visual archives both familial and public. The result of the artist’s systematic scouring of this historical inventory? Arresting photogravure etchings that betray the mechanics of propaganda. Swarovski-studded tableaux that obscure so as to reveal. Ethnographic revelations fueled by an exile’s yearning to – somewhere – belong.

Born in 1981 in Mỹ Tho, Vietnam, Khánh Lê received an M.F.A. from Syracuse University in 2008 and is currently Artist-in-Residence at the Children’s Studio School. This show will mark the first exhibition of Lê’s prints and drawings in the Washington DC area.

"Bird" Workshop by Maria Simonsson (supplies included) Artists will create a bird sculpture using wire, various fabrics and threads. During this 4 hour workshop all students will be able to finish their bird and be totally amazed that no 2 birds will look alike. The techniques that are used can easily be converted to other sculptural projects. The creative variations are endless so join us to have fun while learning new techniques.

Mia Feuer: SUSPENDED LANDSCAPE

Transformer’s project space from floor to ceiling in the creation of a large-scale, site-specific installation of construction cranes and pulley systems. Fabricated from foam and aircraft cable, Mia's brightly colored, intersecting sculptural elements form a “landscape” of impressions that the Canadian-born artist encountered during frequent travels up and down the US East Coast.

Originally from Winnipeg, and most recently a graduate of VCU’s Sculpture MA program, Feuer has been traveling extensively between Richmond, DC, and Vermont, where she just completed a residency that inspired this work. Feuer currently lives in Washington, DC.

ACCLAIMED CHOREOGRAPHER LONNIE J. HIGHTOWER III PERFORMS AT THE PHILLIPS COLLECTION ON MARCH 4

Performance marks new partnership between The Phillips Collection and YoungArts

Nationally recognized choreographer Lonnie J. Hightower III, 1999 YoungArts winner in dance and Presidential Scholar in the Arts, presents O’Keeffe and the Line of Dance on March 4 at The Phillips Collection. This dance interpretation of Georgia O’Keeffe’s radical abstract paintings launches the partnership between The Phillips Collection and YoungArts, the core program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

       Hightower choreographed O’Keeffe and the Line of Dance in response to the Phillips’s current exhibition Georgia O’Keeffe: Abstraction.  He was inspired by the dynamic relationship between Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz and its effect on O’Keeffe’s art.  Hightower has invited Amanda Kay Vercamen, the 2010 YoungArts winner in dance to perform with him.  The dancers will be accompanied by the acapella vocals of Ashlee “Luna” Searles, 1999 YoungArts winner in theater. 

       “I am absolutely delighted to be partnering with such an esteemed organization as The Phillips Collection.  Their museum is renowned worldwide, and YoungArts is fortunate to be able to provide our alumni with the opportunity to be involved with such a fantastic cultural mainstay.  I look forward to a long-lasting partnership,” said Christina DePaul, president and CEO of YoungArts.

       As part of this new relationship, The Phillips Collection will feature YoungArts alumni in performances at the museum throughout 2010.  The next YoungArts alumni performance is a Sunday Concert on April 4 by Ricardo Morales, 1989 Presidential Scholar in the Arts and principal clarinet for The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Gallery 10 hosts artists from Fresno CA's preeminent cooperative gallery, Gallery 25. The offerings of Gallery 25's artists run broad and deep―from the evocative presence of Robert Weibel's exploded-gunpowder prints, the serene power of Karen LeCocq's found-object assemblages, to the slightly unsettling beauty of Lynne Anderson's pastel and charcoal portraiture (shown)―and reflect the gallery's identity as a place of dynamic creativity and interaction. Area critics writing in the Fresno Bee have praised Gallery 25 exhibits as “plush, strong, marvelous display of some of the area's most creative talent...[a] feast of a show” (Felicia Matlosz, re: Alchemy show) and “a full-blooded, exciting, memorable experience...that reflects admirably on its curator (Donald Munro re: Assemblage show curated by Karen LeCocq).

Gallery 25 was founded by Joyce Aiken as an outgrowth of the feminist art movement of the 1970s. Then a professor at California State University, Fresno, Aiken directed the second Feminist Art Program (the first was led by Judy Chicago), which focused on women creating art out of their experiences as women. The gallery began accepting men as members in 1989, and moved to its present space in 2005.
