Mary Chiaramonte grew up in rural West Virginia where she spent most of her childhood drawing, painting, and cultivating the imagination. With a slight obsession for “the human story”, she has developed an interest in documenting personal issues and intimate moments.
Jessie Mann is both a photographer and painter, daughter of photographer Sally Mann, whose projects she assisted and taught her a great deal about art and its role in life. Jessie’s paintings are influenced by her studies in psychology. She calls them, “little proofs, of both the manifold action of perception and the will of consciousness.”

“RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture”
February 8 through October 26, 2008
Since its inception in the 1970s, hip hop has been arguably the most influential and popular musical form in America. Its popularity extends beyond the urban centers of its inception and pervades youth culture throughout the world. Images of hip hop stars are as pervasive as the music itself, and the National Portrait Gallery is featuring the work of artists who have explored this phenomenon. David Scheinbaum has been photographing hip hop artists since 2000, Two Washington, D.C–based graffiti artists, Tim Conlon & Dave Hupp, created four portrait murals to be installed in a hallway that connects the galleries. Jefferson Pinder created three video self-portraits that will be included in the installation. Curators for the exhibition are Frank A. Goodyear III, assistant curator of photographs and Brandon B. Fortune curator of paintings; Jobyl A. Boone, a Smithsonian predoctoral fellow is the guest curator.
All exhibitions are held at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, located at Eighth and F streets N.W., Washington, D.C. For public information, call (202) 633-8300. The National Portrait Gallery is open every day (except December 25th) from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Two Washington, DC Artists were selected for these Fellowships, Maggie Michael and Dan Steinhilber. Congratulations to all!
The Smithsonian Institution has awarded fellowships to 10 artists to conduct research at Smithsonian museums and research facilities as part of the Institution's Artist Research Fellowship Program. The 10 artists are Rachel Berwick (Hamden, Conn.); Abraham Cruz Villegas (Paris); Samuel Durant (Los Angeles); Elizabeth Huey (New York); Runa Islam (London); Marcia Kure (Williamstown, Mass.); Rodney McMillian (Los Angeles); Maggie Michael (Washington, D.C.); Douglas Ross (New York); and Dan Steinhilber (Washington, D.C.).
A panel of art curators and administrators from the Smithsonian and other institutions reviewed the applications. They selected the artists from 47 applicants nominated by art curators and museum directors from around the country. The fellowships are paid and will last two to three months.

COLLECTORS SELECT, the Arlington Arts Center has collaborated with notable area collectors to create six distinctive exhibitions, each exploring a different theme or aspect of contemporary art practice. The show encompasses everything from traditional sculpture and painting, to video and installation, to graffiti. Artists included range from emerging local talent to established international figures.
* Heather and Tony Podesta
Between a Rock and a Hard Place
In this show, the Podestas highlight work that includes references to the natural landscape. The show includes photographic works by D.C. performance artist Kathryn Cornelius; traditional, technically exquisite landscape photography by Steve Alterman; and a site specific stone and wire sculpture that will flow dramatically from floor to ceiling by Barbara Liotta.
* Philip Barlow
Barlow explores the themes that have long driven his collecting—and curatorial—habits: Geometric abstraction, architectural ornament, and numbers or codes. Featured in the show are paintings and drawings by Simon Gouverneur, Wayne Edson Bryan, Tomas Rivas, and Michele Kong.
* Philippa Hughes
The Pink Line Project’s Philippa Hughes showcases Washington, D.C. graffiti artist Tim Conlon—who, along with his crew, will work directly on the walls of the Tiffany gallery, making a large mural that will provide a jarring counterpoint to the Center’s 1930s floor-to-ceiling lead Tiffany windows.
* Daniel Levinas
Levinas, an avid collector of avante-garde Latin American art, brings an international art star to the Center: León Ferrari, winner of the Golden Lion in the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. Ferrari will exhibit his heliographs—large prints that resemble labyrinthine city plans, and reflect on the political oppression of the Argentinean military dictatorship in the 1980s.

Thaggert focuses on the videos and photographs of Bradley McCallum and Jacqueline Tarry, a married bi-racial performance art duo from Brooklyn whose works explore issues of race, gender, and trust.
* Julian Fore
Relates the work of local contemporary artists to his interests in modernism and decorative art—featuring painters Janis Goodman & Jeffrey Smith, sculptor John Dreyfuss, photographs by William Christenberry—plus a Sam Gilliam painting from his personal collection. (tentative)

Tools As Art, Two: Selections from the Hechinger Collection, features a selection from IA's permanent collection donated by home improvement store magnet John Hechinger and his family. This will be HAS's second exhibition featuring the collection of 20th century art representing and incorporating tools and hardware. IA's Hillyer Art Space is funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
International Arts and Artists announces that it has developed a membership program which will further serve the arts community of the Washington area. At Friday's reception IA will officially launch the new movement and invites you to join in.

City Hall Public Collection of Art Tour
At 12 p.m. on Wednesday January 30, the public is invited to the Wilson Building for a guided tour through the City Hall public collection of art on permanent display on floors 1-5 of the Wilson building. The tour will be led by a local artist featured in the collection- Ellyn Weiss.
The City Hall Collection, "HeArt of the City", has been assembled over the past two years under the sponsorship of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. It is the richest and largest permanent exhibition of the work of local artists in the city, featuring a broad range of work, from internationally known artists such as Jacob Kainen, Sam Gilliam and William Christenberry, to work by most of the artists of significance working in our area now. All styles and media are included. The collection truly provides a window into the scope of creative talent and energy that DC offers today.
This is a unique chance to enjoy the collection along with one of the artists and to share your responses. This will be a bi-monthly occurrence.

Nevin Kelly Gallery presents AN IDEAL MIX-UP, a group exhibition that includes works by the contemporary Polish artists that helped launch the gallery in May 2003 and the many local artists who have joined the gallery along the way. The exhibition celebrates both the gallery's origins and its development as a platform for showcasing emerging trends in local art.

Transformer kicks off the new year with the 7th installment of the dynamic FRAMEWORK Panel Series. Designed as a facilitated discussion focused on the changing values and practices in the sphere of art education, Art School, Confidential: Rethinking Art Education brings together an esteemed group of area artists and professors in a dialogue about the influence of art schools in the lives of artists and on the direction of contemporary art-making within the larger arts landscape.
Featuring panelists Billy Colbert (Adjunct Faculty, American University), Maggie Michael, Brandon Morse (Associate Professor of Digital Media & Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Art, University of Maryland, College Park, MD), Renee Stout, and Rex Weil (Professor of Art Theory, University of Maryland, College Park, MD), and moderated by Dean Kessman (Assistant Professor of Photography, George Washington University), the panel discussion will be followed by a thirty minute question and answer segment with the audience.

In his first solo show at District of Columbia Arts Center, Matthew Langley is showing paintings and paperworks that explore multiple mediums but ultimately investigate an approach to painting from divergent strategies - one of building - the other of reducing. This process-based approach, combined with traditional easel painting, allows Mr. Langley to develop works that are multifaceted, while continuing to advance a reductive approach.

There is a steady call for additional arts space of every variety. In these meetings Molly and Paul will focus on specific needs and opportunities. The Warehouse has thrived for the last 13 years by responding to the artistic community. It continues to do so.

Difficult to read, they deny traditional expectations of what a portrait should be while, ironically, confirming its most traditional, ceremonial function.”

How we live our lives is very much on my mind, as I'm sure it is on millions who are setting goals this month. H&F Fine Arts is pleased to present concurrent solo shows of works by Alan Binstock and Joan Belmar. Both artists’ work explores the circle of life and construct dialogue assessing the parallels of three dimensional abstract structures and human life. Belmar’s work will serve as a layered backdrop to the translucent sculptures created by Binstock.
Alan Binstock’s work explores the forms that express or reflect the sacred, the inner life; varied manifestations of the micro and macro worlds. Many years of work as an architect and now in Master Planning at NASA, Binstock’s work is a result of deep space images and ideas that arise from his observation, reflection and meditation. Whether six inches or 60 inches tall there is an compelling mix of steel and glass, Binstock pushes glass to it’s limit…chiseling as if it were stone.
Experimentation with materials such as plastic, acetate, polycarbonate, Mylar, and glass, allows Joan Belmar to create worlds where the viewer is allowed to see some things clearly and some things opaquely. But all things seen are intended to reflect an outer and inner world of psychological stress, fragility and dislocation. Belmar’s work takes on a cosmic-like illusion that carefully entwines photography and optical effects.

DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities
Public Art Building Communities Program offers funds for the creation and installation of permanent public art projects with a life span of at least five (5) years. Projects must be installed in the District of Columbia and should encourage the growth of quality public art throughout the city, support local artists and non-profit organizations, and make public art accessible to District residents. Projects must provide exposure of public art to the broader community or to persons traditionally underserved or separated from the cultural mainstream due to geographic location, economic constraints, or disability. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to: sculpture, mosaics, murals, paving patterns, custom benches, stained glass windows, artistic gates and railing, etc. Funding is available for all fees associated with the design, fabrication and installation of the artwork(s) including: artist fees, materials, insurance, engineering, shipping, fabrication and installation services, permits, copyright registration, and photographic documentation. Projects with youth and senior involvement are encouraged.

Projects must be installed in the District of Columbia and should encourage the growth of quality public art throughout the city, support local artists and non-profit organizations, and make public art accessible to District residents. Projects must provide exposure of public art to the broader community or to persons traditionally underserved or separated from the cultural mainstream due to geographic location, economic constraints, or disability. Eligible projects include, but are not limited to: sculpture, mosaics, murals, paving patterns, custom benches, stained glass windows, artistic gates and railing, etc. Funding is available for all fees associated with the design, fabrication and installation of the artwork(s) including: artist fees, materials, insurance, engineering, shipping, fabrication and installation services, permits, copyright registration, and photographic documentation. Projects with youth and senior involvement are encouraged.

Maryland Art Place (MAP) announces a call for proposals for the Sixth Annual Curators' Incubator. The exhibition is scheduled to take place September 16-October 28, 2008. A small number of curatorial semi-finalists (comprised of either individual curators or curatorial teams) will be selected, with the expectation that curators meet with MAP's staff and Programming Advisory Committee to provide more in-depth detail about their intentions and goals. Curatorial finalists will fully develop their exhibition and publication materials and present their proposals to the Committee for final consideration in Spring 2008.

A Celebration of Art and Air Crystal City (Arlington, VA)
To highlight an aviation connection, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is pleased to announce a six-month “Celebration of Flight.” This campaign kicks off with Crystal Flight, which brings 50 (fifty) 5-foot-by-5-foot airplane statues (25 fighter jets and 25 vintage planes) to the
streets of Crystal City in April 2008.
As part of this public art opportunity, the BID is announcing a final Call for Artists. The Crystal City BID welcomes completed applications from interested artists and designers throughout the area. Details can be found at www.crystalcity.org. Once selected, talented area artists will kick-off the airplane design and paint process in late January. Lowe Enterprises Real Estate Group has generously provided the workshop space to store and decorate the planes, and JK Moving and Storage, Inc., has partnered to provide critical technical support for the handling of the planes.

2008 Bethesda Painting Awards deadline
Applications for the 2008 Bethesda Painting Awards are due Friday, February 15, 2008. Up to $14,000 will be awarded in prize monies. Applicants must be over 18 years of age and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C to be eligible. All original 2-D painting including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, encaustic and mixed media will be accepted. Slides or digital entries on a CD are permitted. There is also a $25 non-refundable application fee. The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 15, 2008.

Save Market 5 Gallery From Eviction
For over 30 years Market 5 Gallery has operated in the north hall of Washington, DC's historic Eastern Market as an alternative art space. Despite the fact that the space has no indoor plumbing or climate control, this non profit arts organization has thrived and launched many a career in the arts. A few years ago, Market 5 went to court to fight an illegal eviction by the city. The case was settled out of court but the rent was raised almost 10 fold with the promise of indoor plumbing, heat, an upgraded electrical system and other improvements to bring the entire market up to code. Now that improvements are underway on the south hall of the market, the city is trying to illegally evict Market 5 Gallery again. Please help the gallery by signing a petition to stop this eviction. Please forward this information to friends and family that are familiar with the gallery and its programs. Washington, DC's Office of Property Management (OPM) and its contractors have bullied and harassed Market 5 Gallery ever since OPM was given oversight of Eastern Market's North Hall. On Tuesday morning, OPM broke in the gallery and changed the locks. Later that day an OPM official said it was a mistake and that they would send someone to let gallery staff in on Wednesday. How do we experience the passage of time?
While physics may accurately describe a universal space-time, our human experiences seem to defy uniform time on a daily basis: each of us has lived a moment that seemed to last forever, or hours that passed by in a heartbeat.
Margot Quan Knights large scale photographs turn to the physical body, that portal through which all experience arrives. She proposes that the body responds to dense experience by expanding mental focus on the activity at hand, to the exclusion of all other thoughts.
In creating the Intervals series Knight looked to Caravaggio, especially his painting Death of the Virgin, and more current works by Bill Viola, Karolina Sobecka, and Sam Taylor Wood as inspiration. She also drew on the personal experiences of losing herself in thought, in a household task, in the chaos of her wedding, and in the interminably long, clear moment of a car accident.

Iona rozeal brown will be showing two new pieces. “You opened my eyes man, thought I had a man, but how could I eye scan.” A print triptych based on a painting triptych of the same name from her show, Blending Lines. And a new painting, Midnight in the…Den of Good and Weavin’, (after Kuniyoshi’s ‘The Orphan Star Amid the Stars of Earth.)
Brown is the recent recipient of a Tiffany Grant and a Joan Mitchell Award.
Jefferson Pinder’s new work, Shoeshine Variation, 2007, both glorifies and archives a service that is quickly disappearing from our fast-paced culture. This diptych video provides a glimpse into the grace and beauty of the shoeshine, while delving into the symbolism wrapped up in the task. As master shine man Ego Brown builds the shine, Jermaine Washington, social provocateur, deconstructs. This narrative guides the viewer through the process of a shoeshine variation that drifts in and out of reality, asking the viewer to actually focus on the multiple interpretations of the act itself.

An Evening with the Authors

Join author Lin Arison and photographer Neil Folberg to celebrate their new book, Travels with van Gogh and the Impressionists: Discovering the Connections. Arison's captivating memoir of her journey through France in search of the lives and art of the impressionists is illustrated with beautiful works in this genre, in conversation with contemporary photography by Folberg. Arison will explore the continuing relevance and personal significance of the artists and their pioneering achievements, while Folberg discusses the challenge of capturing the spirit of impressionist painting in a different medium. The evening includes a book-signing and reception. Included in museum admission; free for members.

Art on Call
The Washington DC Southwest Neighborhood Assembly History Task Force Call Box Committee, in collaboration with Cultural Tourism DC, seeks artists to participate in Art on Call. This public arts project is a city-wide effort led by Cultural Tourism DC in partnership with the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the District Department of Transportation to restore Washington, DC's historic abandoned police and fire Call Boxes as neighborhood artistic icons.
Art on Call challenges artists to use existing police or fire Call Boxes as frames for the artist's unique and creative image or design that can be permanently installed within the call box.

Project 4 recounts the tales of our particular culture through individual perspectives. Chasing Tales features eight different artists who discuss how myths, narratives and fantasies have shaped Western Culture. Religion, literature, games, entertainment and societal myths are among the concepts explored through media, including photography, video and traditional painting techniques. Each artist's work reflects both an individual perspective of the artist's place within his or her narrative and a shared cultural experience. In exploring the history from which they derive, these artists are presenting historical narratives under a new lens. Painters Nancy Baker, Raymond Uhlir and Anthony Pontius use traditional models of pictorial representation as a departure point, and then incorporate contemporary characters and events in order to depict either cynicism, confusion or amusement with our culture. Photographer Kim Keever uses a traditional model of pictorial representation as a jumping off point as well, but mocks the grandness of the sublime American landscape and its ideals by imitating its space with a fish-tank in his apartment filled with kitsch terrarium novelties and dyes. "The Septemberists" by Anthony Goicolea is a romantic and moody video which elegantly narrates the struggles and awkwardness of adolescent boyhood in our culture, a theme that Goicolea commonly employs. The intersection of escapism and reality can be seen in all of the works shown; with these juxtapositions new tales and trajectories result.

Art on the Small Side Holiday Juried Exhibition
Tonight, I missed Touchstone Gallery's Art on the Small Side Holiday Juried Exhibition Opening. I plan to go by to see the show as soon as my jetlag subsides. The exhibit was juried by Rosemary Luckett & Jon Wassom. In keeping with its tradition of showing affordable art during the month of December, Touchstone Gallery offers a juried show of mixed media art and fine crafts sized at 18 inches and under by artists from the metropolitan area.
