Calling all video and sound artists...

Washington Project for the Arts is pleased to present the sixth Experimental Media Series, a screening series of innovative video and sound works. The Experimental Media Series was created to showcase the new media work of exceptional and under-recognized talent and provide a venue for experimental media in the Washington, DC area. Since 2006, EMS has presented the work of over 150 artists, including Julia Oldham, Stefanie Barber, Stan Brakhage, Paul Chan, Herman Asselberghs, Miranda July, Jose Ruiz, and Champ Taylor.

All video and sound artists are invited to submit one recent work that is no longer than 5 minutes, exploring any subject matter of their choice. From the received submissions, juror Paul D. Miller will create a selection of video and sound works to be presented in a series of public screenings. Artists whose work has been selected for the screening programs will be notified during the first week of November. Additionally, two artists submitting the most compelling entries, based on overall quality and originality as determined by the juror, will be awarded the Kraft Prize for New Media of $750 and the WPA Experimental Media Prize of $750 on January 20. Please note that the WPA Prize will go to an artist living and working in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Paul D. Miller aka DJ SPOOKY is a composer, multimedia artist and writer. His written work has appeared in The Village Voice, The Source, Artforum and The Wire amongst other publications. He also produced material on Yoko Ono's recent album Yes, I'm a Witch. Paul D. Miller is represented by Irvine Contemporary in Washington DC.

Goethe-Institut Washington fosters intercultural exchange in the Washington, DC area

Goethe-Institut Washington is an organization dedicated to providing access to the German language, culture and society, and fostering intercultural exchange in the Washington, DC area. Of special interest are film and exhibition projects.The language department offers German courses, workshops and seminars for teachers
of German as a Foreign Language, as well as a wide-ranging testing program to prove proficiency in German.


The Goethe-Institut Washington presents films (classics and new; features and documentaries) every Monday night in its screening room. German films are screened with English subtitles. The May-July film series presents a selection of award-winning films from the Berlinale, the Berlin International Film Festival

 FotoGalerie, the Goethe-Institut Washington’s exhibition space, is an ongoing showcase for the work of young German photographers. In Our Time – Photographs by Anne Lass is on display through the end of May. Next up: an annual favorite, winning works from Germany’s annual graduate photography competition, gute aussichten: new german photography 2009/2010, will be on display June-August. MPAartfest Call for Entries

MPAartfest is a one-day juried fine art and craft show and sale featuring the work of 40 local and regional visual artists. McLean Central Park will reverberate with the sights and sounds of art and music on Sunday, October 3rd at the 4th annual MPAartfest. Last year’s event drew 6,000 art and music devotees.

Mandarin Oriental Gallery showcases student art from DCPS

From May 3-July 31 the Mandarin Oriental Gallery at 1330 Maryland Avenue SW, will showcase 55 pieces of student art from DC Public Schools (DCPS).  The Mandarin approached DCPS in an effort to partner with their neighboring schools, the end result is a full exhibition of art work from 11 schools in various mediums including oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors and 3-D forms.  

This art show is a victory for arts education.  In 2007, many DC public schools did not have access to regular arts instruction --and now, three years into the reform effort all schools have art and music teachers.

Artist’s Talk: May 29, 2 PM

Joan Belmar’s art alternates between paintings on paper to structured acrylic paintings using Mylar and acetate. In his structured paintings, Belmar adheres closely arranged perpendicular strips of Mylar to a back surface and then places a parallel translucent painting on the front of the art. By keeping the front painting simple and in focus, the Mylar strips create optical illusions of blurring the image when viewed from the side instead of the clean uninterrupted view straight on. These optical illusions mirror Belmar’s thoughts. The artist compares his work to the physical stability we recognize in our lives which can easily become blurred or disrupted by an emotion which is not stable, thereby temporarily altering our reality.

Cameron Petke spent a year producing a comprehensive exploration of the aesthetic and acoustical variables involved in making clear-ringing contemporary ceramic bells. Influenced by the classical beauty of marble sculpture, Petke fashions his bells with porcelain clay which is finely sanded and left unglazed to mimic the surface quality of polished stone. Similar to the outer-inner symbolism portrayed in Joan Belmar’s structural paintings, Cameron Petke uses the bell as an artistic object that retains the solidity of its form as it rings with the purity of an ephemeral vibration.

Marie Ringwald returns with new layered wood and metal constructions through which she continues to exercise her interest in store front and warehouse facades. As she simplifies various geometric compositions and carefully balances color, texture and reflective light, Ringwald produces elegant pieces engaging us through her direct, honest responses to architecture and design. The exhibit will feature “Patchwork Warehouse in Black and Silver” an impressive example of carefully edited work, which results in a fine minimal palette using steel, wood and tar paper.

39^th Street Gallery and the Gateway arts center presents an exhibition that explores the peculiar ways in which sense of space and sense of place are linked together.

Each artist works in a traditional medium but uses that medium atypically in order to present a particular concept of spatiality and of place. While they are linked to one another by their desire to show something deeper and more complex than the straightforward visual appearance of their subjects, all have a distinct and nuanced vision that enriches and complements the others.

The Gateway Arts Center at Brentwood is a new visual arts center located at 3901 Rhode Island Ave., Brentwood, MD. Gateway Arts Center is a vibrant arts center that not only provides visual artists with a functional and safe work space, but an Arts Center that encourages programming that engages the neighboring community and the other artists in the Gateway Arts District.

This spring, fine art and interior design will intersect in New York's famed Chelsea neighborhood, as Cheeky Living, LEPERE and Raandesk® Gallery of Art present Art & Living: Emerging Interiors.  The show, which will open Thursday, May 13th at the LEPERE showroom, is a unique collaboration between interior designer (Cheeky Living), showroom (LEPERE) and art gallery (Raandesk® Gallery of Art), and will pair the work of emerging international artists with sleek, modern, European furnishings.

Curated by interior designer and Cheeky Living founder, Karen Chien, Art & Living: Emerging Interiors will showcase furnishings from European design houses including: ABR (Spain), Artelano (France), EMU Re, (Spain) Limited Edition (Belgium), Parri (Italy) and ABR (Spain) alongside a selection of painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media works.

Industry Gallery will open "If I told you one time ..." May 15, 2010, 6-8PM, the first solo U.S. exhibition for New York-based designer Chris Rucker. The exhibition will run through July 3, 2010, and features 10 limited edition works and one installation all created during the past nine years.  

Rucker's design ethos is rooted in the use and reuse of simple and humble material.  His principal medium, oriented strand board (OSB), an engineered wood product made from fast-growing trees, is usually used for flooring, walls, ceilings and other construction purposes.  O

Cornett's work begins with words—often short stories, operas or fairytales. But once she begins painting or drawing, she ceases thinking in terms of written or spoken language and allows her subconscious to dictate the content and direction of her work. She enjoys the contrast between very precisely executed drawings of people and objects and their improbable juxtaposition.

In this juxtaposition of characters and objects, Cornett explores the uncertain and the illogical in life through her pastels and her drawings. "Eventually, something clicks. I aim to create work that is evocative whose meaning is ambiguous. As in life, there is more than one truth, more than one answer and in my work there is more than one narrative."

Flashpoint Gallery presents Marc Roman’s Veritas Obscura, an exhibition of text and found images layered to form a timeline depicting the century of the electron. Veritas Obscura will feature Roman’s signature process: mounting photography, drawing and painting with resin to give sculptural form to traditionally two-dimensional techniques. Successive layers of text and images enhance – or cancel – former creations, adding physical depth while creating a multi-layered narrative.

Spanning the entire parameter of the gallery, the works reflect scientific discoveries such as x-ray technology and the theory of relativity. Conspiracy theories are entertained alongside hard science, giving equal weight to ideas that are born out of amateur speculation and formal, peer-reviewed ideology. The timeline culminates with an examination of the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s highest-energy particle accelerator built to facilitate the study of the fundamental building blocks of our universe.

Roman says, “The images and text are derived from years of scouring books, magazines, internet and radio sources. They include ancient petroglyphs and art, alchemical and periodic symbology, mad scientists and more than a few unidentifiables floating suspended in phosphorescent layers of resin.”

Veritas Obscura is Roman’s first solo exhibition in Washington DC.

Aerial Artistry Makes Debut & Children’s Activities Set for 19th Annual Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) has an exciting line up of unique aerial artistry performances, talented musical entertainment, and engaging children’s activities for the 19th Annual Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival will take place on May 15 & 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the heart of beautiful Reston Town Center.  The arts festival is the largest, top-rated annual art festival in the Washington metropolitan region, attracting over 50,000 patrons from across the region and provides an interactive experience to view, purchase, and experience art directly from the unique and talented artists featured.  The festival will offer plenty to see, taste, hear and do - from hand crafted, one of a kind artwork, a host of live musical and visual performance arts, artist demonstrations, acclaimed children’s activities, and superb food and refreshments.

Aerial Artistry Makes Festival Debut
This year, GRACE has expanded its partnership with the Reston Community Center to present the renowned aerial arts company Arachne Aerial Arts.  The company will bring a set of unique aerial art performances to the streets of Reston Town Center.  The performance features three aerial duets by Arachne Aerial Arts as dreams complimented by inspiring aerial theater performances by In-Flight Theater. http://www.in-flighttheater.com.  This performance will take place on a large installation called The Tower and will occur under the Reston Town Center Pavilion.

1 - 6pm:  HIT BOOK! Workshop.  Join HIT BOOK! co-founder Jeff Hnilicka and fellow artist members of Hit Factorie (Brooklyn, NY) Sarah Sandman, Jenn Nielsen, and Kate Strathmann in the creation of a Sustainability Lab book at Transformer. Created by a group of Brooklyn-based artists, designers, chefs, arborists, and administrators, HIT BOOK! originated as a collaborative effort to create a book in one day. Each book is inspired by a timely theme like Freedom, DNC/RNC, Spring!, and Stimulus. Working diligently on a small but dutiful photocopy machine, each participant cuts & pastes, creating one or more letter size page. Once deadline approaches, the crew rush into full assembly line production mode and pump out a hot HIT BOOK!! All contributors left standing receive a copy of their efforts.  Participants are encouraged to bring in source materials for photocopying (typography, photo, nature books and magazines, etc. etc.).  Transformer will provide other necessary materials + snacks & libations.

9pm: HIT BOOK! After-party Celebration at Comet Ping Pong! After the Workshop, join the Hit Factorie artists and Empire Builder participants at Comet Ping Pong (5037 Connecticut Ave. NW) for a bon voyage celebration before their May 9 departure for the Open Engagement conference. Sustainability Lab

Transformer and Brooklyn-based cultural worker Jeff Hnilicka invite audiences to explore emerging models of cultural production, the sustainability of these models, and their impact within communities though a series of workshops, talks, skill shares, potluck dinners, and artistic actions. Discoveries made during Sustainability Lab will be shared at the Open Engagement conference in Portland, Oregon (May 14 - 17) exploring similar themes. Hnilicka will then be back at Transformer further investigating and interpreting outcomes of Open Engagement.

Water purifies, rejuvenates, cleanses, and heals. Spirits inhabit the waters and require homage or deference. From the droplets in a baptismal font to the scattering of ashes on a holy river, water blesses human lives. Photographer John Stanmeyer traveled the world in search of the many ways different cultures relate to water. He captured everything from offerings alongside the sacred Ganges in India to waterfall rituals in Japan, Laos, and Haiti. The 45 photographs in this exhibition showcase his work.

Exhibition of paintings and installations by Hamiltonian Fellows

Hamiltonian Gallery presents a new three-person exhibition of paintings and installations by Hamiltonian Fellows Magnolia Laurie, Lina Vargas De La Hoz and Leah Frankel.  By presenting physically binary relationships such as inside/outside and construction/destruction, each artist investigates exchanges of energies, and the ebb and flow of natural and social forces.

Within her paintings and installations, Magnolia  Laurie creates environments centered upon masses of broken, crooked lines that could resemble a dense, organized nest, the aftermath of a natural disaster or an architectural armature.

Lina Vargas De La Hoz designs and creates objects that tenant, command, and address its surrounding space.

In Leah Frankel's installation titled (im)Balance, formed spheres of ice nestled in mounds of table salt are flecked throughout the gallery floor.

This exhibition runs from May 8, - June 9, 2010, with an opening reception on Saturday, May 8, 2010, from 7:00 - 9:00pm.

International Arts & Artists' Hillyer Art Space is currently accepting submissions for its 2nd Juried Member's Show, to be curated by (TBA), until June 18 , 2010 (not a postmark deadline) for the show beginning July 2nd through July 31st.

REQUIREMENTS:
·         Artists must be current members of IA&A
·         Submissions may address any topic
·         All media will be considered.
·         $20 submission fee

SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS:

·         An email to membership@artsandartists.org containing FIVE digital images per submission as a high resolution 300 dpi JPEG no larger than 1 MB (do not use GIFs, TIFFs or other formats).  Any additional images (over the limit of 5), or any images that do not conform to the guidelines outlined will not be accepted.  You may also submit less than 5 images.

 In this work Bridget Sue Lambert explores the conflicting world of relationships and desire through the use of the miniature, specifically a dollhouse. Via large size pigment prints of ordinary intimate scenes and portraits of vintage dolls, she explores the physical and psychological stages inhabited in relationships from the beginning to the end. Lambert is interested in evoking the moments, tensions and muddle that exist in these private spaces. The things that we all strive to keep hidden behind closed doors. By arranging dollhouse furniture and miniaturized everyday clutter, she is able to manipulate the boundaries of time and space to express a glimpse of a frozen moment presenting a little portrait of life.  She distills personal experiences and draws on memories and images from both childhood and adulthood to engage in a contemporary discourse.

Bridget Sue Lambert uses ironic titles inspired by self-help relationship books often making light of uncomfortable situations. Through her work she strives to create vignettes that portray the struggles of everyday interpersonal relationships hoping to demonstrate the universality of human reactions and emotions.

This spring, the Corcoran partnered with Worldstudio, AIGA DC, the District Department of Transportation
(DDOT), and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities on a large-scale urban project aiming to engage the public in Washington, D.C.’s environmental efforts. The Urban Forest Project planted 100 street banners created by local artists and Corcoran students throughout downtown Washington, D.C. Using the form of (or metaphor for) a tree, each banner draw inspiration from messages relevant to sustainability, climate change, reducing our carbon footprint, and other environmental issues. Hung on city light poles through Arbor Day and Earth Day, the banners will created a “forest” of thoughtful images in the heart of the city. Selected professional banners and student banner designs will be exhibited in the Corcoran’s Gallery31 from May 5–9. Following their exhibition at the Corcoran, they will then be recycled into unique one-of-a-kind tote bags available for purchase. Proceeds from all sales will go to the city’s non-profit environmental organizations.

Teresa Oaxaca, a young master at making the human figure come to life on the canvas, will have her recent paintings featured at The Art League Gallery in her solo exhibit, “Classical Realism: New Works,” May 6 – June 7, 2010.
 
The inspiration for the “icon” piece in the exhibit came after Oaxaca stumbled upon Jan Brueghel’s “Triumph of Death Over Life.”  She then sought to create her own piece incorporating a skeleton with a live figure. Oaxaca’s painting “In Time” was created via painting the model from life in her studio and then adding the skeleton by painting one from “life” at the Smithsonian.

In most of her works the classical nude is depicted. She has a strong interest in anatomy and the body, as did her favorite artists Gericault, Caravaggio, and Ribera. In some of her newer paintings and drawings one can see Oaxaca’s developing interest for Victorian-era fashion, perhaps indicating a new direction.

The Arts Club of Washington presents an exhibition of large format, black and white photographs by Arlington, VA based photographer Andrew Zimmermann.

The artist uses an 8 x 10 camera and traditional darkroom processes to reveal the changing forms of light, perception, and landscape. This series of images, which was created in and around Colorado’s Front Range, explores the constant flux of the natural world. Instead of presenting a series of landscapes as a static record of an unchanging place, Zimmermann expresses a vision of nature filled with stark contrasts of illumination and space. These images aspire to achieve in photography something Cezanne accomplished in painting: a disordering of our confidence in the consistency of vision.

Andrew Zimmermann lives and works in Arlington, Virginia. His work has been influenced not only by photographers, but also by old masters such as Titian and Cezanne, and 17^th century Chinese ink painters Dong Qichang and Bada Shanren.

The Arts Club of Washington is headquartered in the historic James Monroe House, located at 2017 I (Eye) Street NW, Washington, DC 20006, and is open 10 AM – 5 PM Tuesday through Friday, and 10 AM – 2 PM Saturday. The reception is free and open to all.

Alex Todorovich (1950-2009) was an untrained, or naïve, artist, who first turned to art when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 54.  Her diverse body of work- collage drawings, assemblage sculptures and beaded jewelry-integrates years of experience in folk art, decorative arts, and ornamentation.  By giving form to her internal dialogues and philosophical tips on life she addresses not only the existential and cultural experience of cancer, but also the social body of love, celebration, and connection that comes with healing.  She challenges us to walk with her as she attempts to answer her own questions: How do you leave a life before you are ready? How do you let go, to die? This intimate collection moves us through Alex's outer struggle with the physical cancer to the inner passage of the Self as it prepares to leap off the well-traveled road of a precious life.  Chemotherapy, radiation and cancer ran through her system, but the cultural impact of a lived and loved life is the ultimate answer to her own questions of not only how to get off a well traveled path, but how to create one in the first place.

Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts announces a free lecture by Michael Lerner, PhD: Healing from the Inside Out: The Regenerative Power of the Human Spirit, to be held Tuesday, May 4 at 6:30PM, 1632 U Street, NW.

This talk will explore how we might live best in the midst of today's great challenges: of our own personal struggles, of those we love, of our communities, of our country and of our planet. Do we each have personal "styles" of healing that we may strengthen? While natural, healing is not automatic, and can be blocked or facilitated. The intention of this talk is to help us discover ways to deepen our own unique, resources for healing.

As we answer the call to discover our personal philosophy of life or approach to spirit, we may heal at many levels -- in our body, our emotions, our mind, and our spirit. The quest for the unique ways we each heal best is a life-long journey. It is a process of growing in wisdom, learning to love better and making meaning out of suffering.

Healing from the Inside Outwill draw on approaches from the ancient shamanic traditions, the great contemplative and wisdom traditions, integrative medicine, the healing arts, and the psychological teachings of Carl Jung, Victor Frankl, Roberto Assagioli, and Parker Palmer.

Lorton, VA: The Workhouse Arts Center presents the exhibition INSECTA: collage and mixed media paintings by Michele Norris, during May and early June in the Gallery of Studio 4. The exhibition features work from a series of abstract collage paintings inspired by the wonders of nature. The dynamic paintings are created using hand pulled prints, elaborate drawings on filmy thin papers, charcoal and paint. The delicate line, bold colors and spontaneous mark-making, work to create richly layered surfaces.

Fairfax county based artist Michele Norris is an award winning painter. Born and raised in rural New Hampshire, Norris began painting as a young child. She attended the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a bachelor of Arts in Fine Art. She then completed advanced studies in Graphic Design. She realized success as an Art Director in the fashion industry and as a freelance designer.

For the past ten years, Norris has been painting commissioned work for private clients and participating in exhibitions. Her work is currently displayed with various collectors in Arizona, California, North Carolina, Virginia and New Hampshire. Today Michele paints in her studio at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA.

Addison/Ripley Fine Art presents an uncompromising selection of new works by Washington artist, Dan Treado. This work continues to surprise and delight with the artist's signature serial imagery;  layers of color, light as air, add dreamy associations, an impossible depth and lush surface.  Appropriated samples from selected illustrations and texts in some of the works provide tense contrast.  In others, a crazy quilt of disparate imagery is woven together by this talented painter.  At once cryptic and mesmerizing, the paintings in this third exhibition by the artist at Addison/Ripley demonstrate a maturity, complexity and solid accomplishment.  They may "request quiet" but they shout and crackle with energy.

Since 1998 the ART TALK series has addressed topics relating to artists' practice, issues in contemporary art, art history, collecting and connoisseurship.

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) presents BEAUTIFUL: Virginia Women Artists and the Body, an exhibition that explores the complexity of physical beauty through the works of four Virginia based artists. Photographers Victoria F. Gaitán and Bernis von zur Muehlen, painter Elizabeth Menges, and sculptor Elissa Farrow Savos illuminate private moments, cultural expectations, disfigurement, and the transience of beauty manifested in the human form.

BEAUTIFUL is part of Virginia’s 2010 statewide event MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts. The celebration includes thousands of special events and programs offered between March and June of 2010. Events include plays, choreography, compositions, and exhibitions of paintings, photography or films created by women or featuring women as the primary focus. This celebration is an unprecedented collaboration of hundreds of participating artists and cultural organizations and is a demonstration of the breadth and diversity of arts and culture across the Commonwealth. It is the first of what the cultural community hopes will be an ongoing series of statewide collaborations shedding light on topics of interest to the people of Virginia.

John D. Mason will be discussing an array of of important legal issues for artists. Topics include contracts, licensing, negotiations, online/internet legal issues, business formation and maintenance, intellectual property and copyright/trademark. Please go prepared with questions because he likes an interactive discussion and is happy to explore the questions artists always want to ask an art lawyer.

John D.Mason of The Intellectual Property Group, PLLC is a Washington DC/Maryland-based art and entertainment and intellectual property attorney. His practice focuses on copyright and trademark matters, litigation, contracts, and commercial matters. He works with writers, artists, and creative people and companies to protect, promote and exploit their work and is also a literary agent. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Washington Lawyers for the Arts and the Advisory Board of the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington.

The Artist Speaker Series is a succession of lectures given by established artists and art professionals to aid in the artistic and entrepreneurial development of our So-Hamiltonian Fellows and other emerging artists.

Hamiltonian Artists is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing professional development opportunities for creative artists early in their careers. We offer a competitive two-year fellowship program to new, innovative visual artists in all media through an annual competition. Artists from around the nation are encouraged to apply.
