Performing Artist Roster Program

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is currently accepting applications from individuals and non-profit organizations for the Performing Artist Roster Program (PAR). The roster showcases some of the District’s most talented artists in dance, music, and theater. Performing artists featured in the roster have demonstrated their artistic excellence and have been reviewed by an independent peer review panel of area arts professionals.

The purpose of the program is to promote artistic exchanges between Washington, D.C. and Maryland. The goals of the program are to promote the artistic excellence and development of District of Columbia performing artists by enhancing their marketability and touring capacity through successful touring engagements beyond their home state, professional development workshops, and roster campaign promotions.

Oil Paint Workshop (FREE- space is limited):

Utrecht's Resident Artist and Brand Manager will discuss the historical beginnings of oil color all the way up to modern day manufacturing. Participants will learn about the chemistry and coatings technology behind artists' oil colors, so by the end they will know how to evaluate oil color and its properties in order to make wise decisions in regards to archival art.

Color properties and hand mulling color demos will be explored and all are invited to participate. Technical questions are invited.

"After the Election" will be a political roundtable discussion exploring Social, Economic, and Political issues surrounding the Election and America's future.

The panelists will be:
Professor Allan Lichtman - Lichtman began teaching at American
University in 1973, rising to chair of the History Department, and was named Scholar/Professor of the Year in 1993. Outside of the classroom, Lichtman has testified as an expert witness on civil rights in more than 70 cases for the U.S. Department of Justice and for civil rights groups such as the NAACP, the MexicanAmerican Legal Defense and Education Fund and Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. He also consulted for Vice President Al Gore and Senator Edward Kennedy. He assisted the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights investigation into voting irregularities in Florida during the 2000 election[1], submitting an extensive report of his statistical analysis of balloting problems. Lichtman concluded "there were major racial disparities in ballot rejection rates".[2] Lichtman is the author or co-author of six books and more than 100 articles. He is best known for the "Keys" system, presented in his books The Thirteen Keys to the Presidency and The Keys to the White House

Mr. David Swanson - David Swanson holds a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He has worked as a newspaper reporter and as a communications director, with jobs including press secretary for Dennis Kucinich's 2004 presidential campaign, media coordinator for the International Labor Communications Association, and three years as communications coordinator for ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Swanson is Co-Founder of AfterDowningStreet.org and Washington Director of Democrats.com, a board member of Progressive Democrats of America, the Backbone Campaign, and Voters for Peace, and a member of the legislative working group of
United for Peace and Justice.

All at Once

Michael’s latest body of work marks a dramatic shift towards an abundantly worked surface and the addition of text. Michael employs text to take a leading role in her work while continuing to command paint with large gestures, controlled pours, drips and slippages. Michael uses the filter of language, from film, music, literature and conversation to develop narrative and emotional structure. There are allusions to art, wars, relationships, philosophy and the kinds of roles we enact both public and private.

The title of the show All at Once, reflects on the difference between paintings and the time-based works: film, literature and music that are her influences. A person views a painting all at once; in an instant, the duration of the experience is chosen by the viewer rather than by the maker. Although a painting is still, it does reflect time’s passage while building history. The history of Michael’s paintings begins with spray paint; she associates the air of the spray can with breath and the projection of spoken words leaving the body. The new work references abstract expressionism and the text-based works of Bruce Nauman and Ed Ruscha, artists of nearly the same era as her film influences. Michael’s paintings also maintain their own personal history that is continually being masked, surrendered and opened by the artist.

Michael is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant and an Artist Fellowship from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She was a resident artist in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden's Artist at Work program in 2006-07. During 2008, Michael was awarded an Artist Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian and received the Trawick Prize from the Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards.

Jonathan Brody Tucker was born in Washington, DC's, Southeast Women's Hospital about a decade before the internet was born. It is still too early to tell which will have a greater impact on society. Growing up in Crofton, Maryland, Jonathan began writing the terribly clichéd, sing-songy filth he calls poetry to express how he felt about the cute girls in school. Due to his extreme cowardice, he did not read his poetry in public until many years later. Some people like it, but they are a strange and varied bunch. At the University of Maryland, College Park, he founded Terpoets so he could share his whining diatribes, political propaganda, and emotional drivel with a larger community of like-minded weirdos.

Fine Arts Commission OKs Homeland Security plan at St. E's

The plan to build a 6 million-square-foot headquarters for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on the west campus of St. Elizabeths Hospital was approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts today, a day after D.C. Del. Eleanor Homes Norton submitted legislation to authorize major funding for the project.

Commissioners voted 3-0 to support the plan over long-standing warnings from historic preservationists that it would destroy the site’s historic nature and potentially cause it to lose its status as a National Historic Landmark. It still needs approval from the National Capital Planning Commission.

"Directions-Terence Gower, Public Spirit"

November 5, 2008 to March 22, 2009

The Canadian artist considers a little-known period in the history of founding-donor Joseph H. Hirshhorn’s quest to find a home for his collection. Gower’s research-based multimedia installation reveals Hirshhorn’s plan in the 1950s to build a town with art and culture at its core in the wilderness of Ontario, Canada. The original designs for the community were never realized, thus Hirshhorn was compelled to continue his pursuit of a permanent home for his art.

Based on materials uncovered by Gower as a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow in 2007, the project presents an animated video “tour” of the town, aluminum sculptures derived from original models of the museum and office tower buildings and an installation of four cases of archival materials. The cases feature a number of materials Gower discovered during his research, texts written by the artist and a selection of works on paper from the Hirshhorn’s collection dating from the 1930s to 1950s by artists such as Man Ray, Josef Albers, Irene Rice Pereira and Victor Vasarely. These are works that might have been included in an inaugural exhibition at the museum had Hirshhorn, Ontario, been realized.

The “Directions” series highlights the vitality, diversity and inventiveness that characterizes contemporary art. It has brought new work by emerging and established artists to Washington, D.C., since 1987. This exhibition is made possible in part by Trellis Fund and the Peter Norton Family Foundation and is organized by Hirshhorn curator Anne Ellegood.

Andrew Zimmermann: Photographs

A Photographic Exhibition

Andrew has been making large format photographs for the past 10 years. Using a time-honored photographic process with large format view cameras, Andrew creates black and white silver gelatin prints that combine the virtues of the starkly literal and the rigorously abstract. Contact printed to the original size of the negatives and hand worked throughout the developing and printing process, his photographs are crisp, detailed, and intimate, fully maintaining the integrity of the negative. Christie’s Evening Sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art totaled $114 million, with 68% sold by lot. New world auction records were set for six artists, including Joseph Cornell, Yayoi Kusama, Robert Irwin, and Paul McCarthy, and for works on paper by Tom Wesselmann and Agnes Martin. Buyers were 59% American, 18% European, and 24% other.

Participating in Washington’s inaugural FotoWeek Celebration, Zenith Gallery presents two of Washington’s finest photographers, David Glick and Colin Winterbottom, in a show dedicated to landscapes … some made by man, others by nature.
While Glick’s and Winterbottom’s works stem from an aesthetic sensibility and a compositional eye, they differ in the subject matter and hues they use to create their art. Winterbottom’s trademark photos portray Washington DC monuments and cityscapes in black and white, at night and sometimes in adverse weather, and Glick’s bring to light the dramatic beauty and vibrant color of America's Southwest. Questioning whether or not her artistic endeavors only truly exist in the conceptual form, when a project can actually be considered "finished", and if the objects she creates are merely remainders of larger artistic production - Nilay's painting, drawings, and mixed media installations featured in If You Didn't Know What This Was, Would You Know What This Is? document her obsessive consideration of objects and belongings used, consumed, and often discarded. Nilay stages artistic interventions throughout Transformer's project space to explore the seemingly banal issues of daily life and their broader implications on her art-making processes. About this exhibition, Nilay states, "It compiles many endeavors I have approached to date as an artist. I'm releasing the evidence of my art experiences."

Public Artists to Transform Columbia Heights, DC Intersection with Community-Based Art Installation

In keeping with its history of combining art, architecture and construotion, 3DG is pleased to announce yet another event. On Sunday, artists from the DC area and the East Coast will create a public art installation that seeks to lift up the Columbia Heights community spirit by improving aesthetic enjoyment. A dozen artists will work together with renown graffiti artists, like Tim CON and Leon Rainbow, in a live, outdoor presentation of art and people changing their environment. The artists will cover the 80-foot fence of a construction site with color, imagination, and reflection.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

Thomas Müller at Project 4

Project 4 presents a solo exhibition of work by Los Angeles-based artist Thomas Muller. Employing photography, sculpture and other media, Muller creates time-based installations that emphasize relationships between seemingly disparate objects and images. Through these ostensibly absurd associations he hopes to stress similarities and accentuate opposites in order to create a visual and conceptual tension.

As conceptual artists before him, Muller challenges the viewer to contemplate his definition of art and question what exactly that is.

You wondered where I was this fall? What have I been doing? Well, I wasn't exactly the troll under the bridge, but I did get my hair blown around for over a month at the 18th Street underpass. Two of my recent public art projects are right across the river from Washington, DC in Crystal City, VA. Check them out. I liked being out in the elements, even on the gritty texture of the street, painting the Prism mural. There is something wonderful in being totally immersed in a creative project with good people around you. The best part was witnessing daily, with a river of pedestrians, the change that was taking place on this piece of concrete in Virginia. You know.... it does matter, those little tiny glimpses that let light and color in the mind. It excites the imagination, like peripheral vision, you might not see it head on, but you know it's there and you feel a delightful presence. Barren to beauty, perhaps not in excess, but steps in that direction. I love it when a team of artists form a good match. Jose Piedra, Michael Hammond, the wind and I painted the geometry, color and light that brought smiles to faces. Dear mural, keep doing that and more.

The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) unveils its latest creative endeavor, Art Walls, which includes three projects, Radiance, Prism and Ellipsis. Radiance and Prism flank the 160’ walls on the north and south sides of 18th Street South, bringing light and color to the thousands of Metro commuters who make their way to and from the Crystal City Metro station each day.
Local mosaic artist Valerie Theberge created Radiance, 25 dazzling and dynamic individual mosaics on one side, and Anne Marchand designed Prism, 35 large rectangles filled with geometric shapes for the opposing wall. 
Elsewhere in Crystal City, Ellipsis, courtesy of artist Anne Marchand and the Zenith Gallery, takes twelve of the artist’s most colorful abstracts, enlarges them into 10’ square panels and mounts them on the back wall of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Art Walls Creates Gallery in Crystal City - Crystal City sparkles with the unveiling of the Art Walls collection which currently includes three projects: Radiance, Prism, and Ellipsis. The Crystal City BID chose 18th and S. Bell Streets (Metro gateway area) for the first set of Art Walls, Radiance and Prism, which flank the north and south sides of 18th Street South, respectively. Developed by local mosaic artist Valerie Theberge, Radiance splashes 25 dynamic and dazzling pieces along the 160’ wall. Across the street, Prism – the inspiration of Anne Marchand -- consists of 35 4’ x 9’ rectangles filled with geometric shapes and unique elements which enliven the wall. Embraced by Crystal City commercial property owners, the first corporate Art Wall, Ellipsis, is a partnership involving Gould Property Company, the Airport Hyatt and Concord Residences. Ellipsis, also an Anne Marchand creation, takes 12 of the artist’s most colorful abstracts, enlarges them onto 10’ square panels, and mounts them onto the back wall of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Be sure to check out the colorful, lively and whimsical pieces of art!

ReCap of the Marine Corps Marathon 2008

Blue skies, warm weather, 320 bright feather banners, 50 colorful airplanes, 4 energetic bands, and thousands of supportive faces shaking red cowbells greeted the 30,000 runners who entered Crystal City for miles 22 and 23 of the 33rd Annual Marine Corps Marathon. To celebrate the Marathon and its participants, the Crystal City BID organized an all day street festival featuring live music, performances by Step Afrika!, moon bounces, an art market, a children’s area organized by the National Children’s Museum, restaurant tastes, and other activities.

Americans for the Arts, Business Committee for the Arts to Merge

Americans for the Arts has announced that it will merge operations with the Business Committee for the Arts (BCA), creating the largest-ever arts advocacy group in the private sector.

The merger will enable Americans for the Arts to increase private-sector support for the arts and arts education by engaging and educating business leaders nationwide on the economic impact and value of the arts in business and community settings.

Aquifer

November 8 - December 19, 2008

Washington Project for the Arts and the Washington Sculptors Group announce the opening of "Aquifer," an exhibition of work that explores the significance of water. For this show, curators J.W. Mahoney and Deborah McLeod have selected 35 artists who are particularly compelled to address the physical, psychological, metaphysical, and aesthetic qualities of water.

Both J.W. Mahoney and Deborah McLeod are seasoned curators and have long shared a particular interest in water themes. Mr. Mahoney has regularly engaged the symbolic qualities of natural forces, in both writings and exhibitions, and Ms. McLeod is currently producing a film titled "Purification" on the ancient connection between river baptisms and the assignation of the natural feature as a source of reconciliation with the sublime. "Aquifer is not a show that specifically intends to present the subject of water as a memento mori on human negligence and water's precipitous dearth," says McLeod, "it is instead about water's critical meaning to us in so many hierarchically varied aspects of survival and inspiration."
